Generator belt on H

A friend asked me to run down some electrical problems on his '46 Super H. After replacing some burnt up wiring etc I noticed that the belt from the fan to the generator was about "gone". I'm not informed on IH matters, so my question is: How do you replace and adjust the generator drive belt on one of these old timers?

Thanks!!

To replace it you have to remove the fan belt first as far as I know, I can't think of a way to avoid that other than using a link belt. The generator should have an arm going from the top over to the thermostat housing that has a slot to adjust the tension.

The generator should have an adjustable pulley. There is a set screw that you loosen and the front half of the pulley rotate in order to tighten or loosen the belt. Remember to tighten the set screw back when done!

This may not be pure or correct, but it sure is easy and wears very well.

A relative has an old IH 450 with Delco alternator conversion.
He asked me to help repair a no charge situation.

The alternator belt was worn out , near broken and very loose.
The fan belt was good and tight enough, but from being parked in wet cattle barns, the adjustable water pump pulley was incredibly rusty and stuck.
Not wanting to tackle that rusted pulley, I got a roll of adjustable length "NuTlink" belting that we use on our grain cleaner. Simply slide it over the pulleys, find the correct number of links and connect the ends. Has been on there for two years daily use, charges good and still shows no wear. :)
Avalible at most bearings and drives places.
Clip together V belt.
