What is the difference between a 6 volt starter and a 12 volt starter. Can an H farmall 12 volt starter be used on a H Farmall 6 volt system.

The difference is in the windings. A six volt tractor converted to 12 volts can use the original six volt starter.

A 12 volt starter WILL NOT work on a 6 volt system.

What I did on my M was I had my 6 volt starter rebuilt and converted to 12 volt so I now have a 12 volt generator and a 12 volt starter but have retained a more factory look....I have the benifits of a 12 volt system with a more factory look
