SMTA vs. 400/450 gear ratios and ground speeds

Having some trouble with this one and finding conflicting information.

Is the first gear ratio on the MTA the same as the 400/450? I'm not finding the published ground speeds and don't have the book for that. Did they not rate the 400 at a lower max RPM and perhaps generate different ground speeds for that reason? Something I read in one of Fay's books about that.
 
The first gear on the SMTA, 400, 450 are the same and there is no factory low-low first. However, a 560 gear set will fit and the owner can create his own low-low first. I have done it on a SMTA. I also swapped in the Farmall 560 ring and main shaft w/pinion for another reduction. When those reductions are combined with the TA low range, first gear is about half of the SMTA, 400-450 first gear in high range.

Tractor also has new 15.5 x 38 tires on new 14" rims, a pair of front wheel weights, a pair of frame weights, and five sets of rear wheel weights but it still won't out pull my 660 w/Elwood which is heavily ballasted too.
 
the rated speed on the super m 400 and 450 were all 1450. this was a mistake in guy fay's book. he must have confused hi idle and rated speed. 1600 verses 1450.
 
Like the other posters said. Operaters manual for a SMTA and a 400 list the same ground speeds with 12X38 tires. Same specs on engine speeds also.

I've got some land clearing to do and am planning on using one of the rougher looking machines to do some of it. I have available to me from a family estate an old HD-9 but it has had a rough life and I'm a little afraid I'll be left holding the bag if something big lets go while I'm using it.

I wouldn't rule out buying a td-something or other but haven't seen any for sale within a reasonably hauling distance.
 
I haven't bought any manuals yet for my SMTA through 450 tractors. Will do so at some point as the 400lp is a low sn and excellent mechanical condition. The MTA's I found have the north/sough LP tank. STILL haven't put photos up of them but intend to at some point.
