Was great weather here today.. no real sun.. but warm.. like 79.. 1-2mph wind.. low humidity... perfect painting weather.

got some color on tractor.

rims were already fine. redone in recent history.

got 1 wheel weight hanging on the shop crane, cleaned and painted, then ran out of time. got 1 more to do.

pretty much when the weigths are cured I can mount them up... that and a few detail issues, and the H will be ready to go.

she was in good enough mechanical condition to only need some maintenance, and freshening up.

still chasing that electrical issue...

dinked with the cheap chinese reg on it today.. points for the field were not striking squarely, burnt and pitted badly.. past saving.

put the new reg on I got at napa.. again.. chinese junk points did not strike face to face.. took it back.

have one on order, crossed to a carquest number.. coming in next week.

till then I rigged up a spdt/center off toggle switch with 2 resistors to bias the generator field so I can have a high and low charge setting... using the old chinese regulator with the dead field circuit as a cut out only , etc.

Still need a muffler clamp, and a couple other detail items... and she's ready to roll.

Wow, they must have slipped a cheap one in on ya! The ones Ive bought have never given me any trouble, other than normal wear on the points. But its been a few years since Ive bought one.

these are the cheapest regs I have ever seen...

covers are held on w/ 2 screws and are near as thin as a pop can.. metal bases are thin.. bad soldering.. flaking chrome plating.. bad contacts that aren't square or face to face.. etc.

hoping the CQ one is better..

I haven't been impressed with CarQuest as a whole. To start, their filters don't come with the orings. They are also plenty high on price. I wish Harbor Freight had VRs. At least you wouldn't pay $50 for a POS regulator.

I think you forgot to attatch the pictures to the post.

I actually TOOK pics.. anbd left the dern camera setting onthe bench when I left to go to work.

there WILL be pics though.

by tomorrow the paint will be cured enough for decals... ;) might even get the wheel weights finished up. If I paint the other one in the am.. I might get it mounted at lunch.. I use quick dry hardner.. it's usually completely good in an hour or two.

I got one for my super h from NAPA that is made in the USA. Way higher priced than the others but it is working like it should. Dont remember the number but they can get them. Went through 4 or 5 of the China or India ones and they would only last about a week.

I can't use a stock regulator as my unit has been converted to 12v via a genny, thus needing a non stock reg... and the napa number for it was cheap junk innards..

Soundguy, gotten fed up with everybodys regulators, all are junk. tried a couple all electronic ones, they do okay most of the time. Thinking about going the cutout route or building my own with a variable resistor and grounding the field permanently

Variable resistor, my older brother put one on the 37 ford coupe. I bought the car from him years later and it still worked fine. You have to know what you are doing when charging but it sounds like you do. As a mechanic I was tempted many times to put them on a customers tractor but then you would have to educate all the would be drivers or you could really boil the batteries. A voltmeter hooked into system would be really nice to have with that set up.

my hi/lo charge / cutout setup works fine.

I calculated the resistance I needed for a 3a charge at hi and lo rpm, and i can use it backwards.. and run my lamps and still have 3a charge ..

could make an all electric one with a comparitor.. but no need...

I to have given up on regulators. After 2 bad made in India junkers and 1 usa regulator.
(Genny was rebuilt and I can ground out the field at the regulator and charges fine.)
I am crossing over to the dark side. I ordered a Hitachi alternator yesterday. My NAPA man said it had to be special ordered out of a warehouse in Colorado. I said say what. He said when was the last time you saw a 1978 Datsun on the road. About 20 years I replied!!

yep.. I can ground the field or run it thru a resisotr and the gen charges just fine.

it's the junky field ckt on the reg for sure.

contacts are soft and cheap and pit and burn quick.. not to mention they are off center and don't strike square.. :(

makes a lucas reg look like a piece of fine art.. :)

amp meter works just as good.

I calculated my resistors out to a 3a charge with or without lamps.. depending on which bank I use.., or, if using the low value one at high rpm.. it will be a hi charge.. etc..

This string of comments regarding generators and regulators makes me feel better. You guys helped me get my old H back to the orginal 6 volt positive system but it took the purchase of 2 generators and 2 regulators to get it going. All of the parts were purchased from an Case/IH dealer but they were made in Mexico. Certainly cheap looking stuff. The first generator was bad out of the box. The couldn't explain but replaced. The 1st regulator would not work but they would not replace since it had been installed. I had to purchase another and wired it exactly as the first and got it going. I know I did nothing different. Obviously the first regulator was just bad. This week I went with the Hitachi alternator with your help and am pleased with the results. Thanks for the help!

Amp meter won't tell you battery voltage which is nice to know to tell if you are over charging or undercharging. You can put in three amps into a full charge warm battery and still be over charging. With a variable resistor you can adjust the charge rate to suit the battery and temp conditions by observing the voltmeter. Not a big deal one way or the other, just more information.

in the old days i'd get a junky one from tisco, maybee once every couple years.. now? it's the chinese un well made parts.

they are getting ok on wrenches and socket sets.. but still havn't mastered a vr yet.. :)

I have a hi/low tickle switch on her now.. no worries about when / if I find a new vreg..

yep.. when I pulled the 1st reg apart, contacts for field were not hitting square, and had burned.

2nd one thad them square, but not face to face.. still only half surface area conducting.. :(
