am going to look at a 460D with 2pt hitch wide front end on Sunday, It has not been run in 5-6 years although the owner said it did turn over about a year and a half ago, but did not start, can anyone tell me any good or bad about these tractors? we always had h's and m's and once had a 400D that was a nightmere but H and M were good tractors I am just trying to decide as it I dont want to get into something that will cost me as much to fix as it would to buy a clean running tractor, may I add the price is 1500 and they say the tires and 1 rear rim are shot

Tell the seller to get it running or you will only give him scrap price which might be around $400 or less if you have to travel alot.

If you drag it home, disconnect the fuel lines at the injectors so that it gets primed while you crank. Give it at least half throttle. Check the glow plugs. Reattach everything and sit on the glow plug button for two minutes. Hit the starter button. It should start if the air intake is xlear. If not, give it a whiff of ether after the glow plugs are cool.

I wouldn't mess around with new fuel. I have started Diesels after 15 years of neglect.
.

I am with Wardner on this one.

If it aint running, you REALLY do not know what is wrong with it????

Also,Tire and rims are EXPENSIVE !!! Have you priced rear tires lately! rims are like $300.00 each new.

Other than maybe some of the parts on it,its worth it's weight.

The 460 diesel is basically just a slightly smaller version of the 560 diesel.

You don't see very many diesels.

The nice thing about diesels is if they're kept inside and/or with the exhaust covered, they rarely ever seize from rust.

If he can get it running, I think it would be worth the $1500. Non-running, decent looking, parked in a shed I'd try to get it for $1000. Non-running, sitting outside for the last 20 years, I'd walk away from it.

I especially agree with checking the glow plugs - if they are not working these things won't start no matter how good or bad the engine is.

$1500 sounds about right, with scrap prices high you go in there and offer $500 your paying less than a scrapper. Last summer in Platteview, WI non running Farmall's brought more than scrap price. Mohr's in Cuba City, WI bought about everything there. Don't listen to guys who tell you pay scrap price, because that's what they'll pay for it. Take in account it's a diesel, which it's more diserable than a gas. If you don't buy someone else will pay it.

Lot of changes from early to late 460's in engine, fuel system as well as final drives. I would want to hear it running, drive it and then shut it off and come back a few hours later and restart it. They can be a night mare or a nice little rig.

Needs a wheel and tires... asking $1500 for it? That's about $2K for a rear wheel and 4 tires and you end up with $3500 in it before you even try to get it running. Running and with tires it would be about a $3000- 3500 tractor, so you have to ask yourself, "Do I take a chance on it costing a minimal amount or [u:8c6f5d7276]maybe[/u:8c6f5d7276] cost a couple grand to get it running?" big chance to be taking if you ask me.

It is virtually impossible to find a 460 or 560 that has not had the final drive problems fixed. The problem was discovered early in production, so most of them came off the line already fixed. What few were already out there were fixed when they broke, or were fixed as part of the recall.

If you happen to find one that hasn't been updated, someone bought it and parked it in a barn for 54 years. The tractor is practically new.

I am trying to get a 560 up and running after setting for some time. The old skunky fuel in the pump has gumed up some of the parts in side, has to be taken apart and cleand hope that solves the starting problem.

Why not take a battery with you and see what it does? If it turns over and smokes, there's a reasonably good chance it will start. If it needs rims, you don't HAVE to buy new ones, do you? There's a tractor salvage yard in Audubon, Iowa with acres of good rims. However, that being said, you might be better off saving you money and buying a running vehicle. I probably shouldn't have answered this post, I couldn't turn down a homeless Farmall any more than a little girl turn down a stray kitten.

About 50 hp and i hope so because i just bought a 535 3 bottem semi mount plow for mine.I like Pete 23's advise!! Bud.

(quoted from post at 18:33:26 01/21/12) OK next question, can anyone tell me what the HP oof this tractor is and will it pull a 3 bottom plow?

It's rated for a 4 bottom plow. This what I found in external_link
