Farmall Seat Springs

In the past, I have read there are different number of "notches" on the seat springs of the M's right on up thru the 560's that denotes different operator's weights; from memory, I'm thinking one, two or three on the letter series tractors and maybe three, four or five notches on the 560 and such series. My question is, just exactly where are these elusive "notches" located on the spring?? I assume close to the top end of the spring somewhere, but I have not been able to find any on the handful of tractors I have checked.

Yes, the notches are right at the very top. I'm not sure, but I THINK the lightest weight spring did NOT have a notch, and I've never seen a notch on any of the aftermarket springs although I have learned from experience the black colored spring from A&I is a heavy duty spring, and the red colored spring from Tisco is a lightweight spring. As far as I know, there are no springs being made in the medium ranges.

My original 1950 'H' spring has "IH-5" stamped in the big end, 1/2" from the end, sort of on the inside.
My original undated old manual says
Heavyweight operator 220 lbs. = 5 notches
Lightweight operator 140 lbs. = 3 notches
Regular spring 180 lbs. = 4 notches.
