hey found a hydro 70 with a good engine but will only go forward at one speed. Is there and easy fix or are these a high dollar thing to work on. Just looking for advice on whether to bite on it or pass.
 
Thats a tough call.How many hours on the tractor? It could be as simple as a linkage problem, or the hydro pump could be toast. It all depends how cheap you can get the tractor, and if you are capable of doing the work yourself. Do you have a shop and equipment to work on a big tractor? We need more info Kent

The only way for the tractor to have just one forward speed is to have the pump swash plate stuck at a forward position angle. If the tractor speeds up when the lever is moved forward in the second half of the range it would mean that there is servo control to the motor.

If the tractor will pull a load while going forward most likely the pump and motor are still in pretty good shape. In that case most likely it can be repaired without splitting the tractor.

If I had to venture a guess as to what might be wrong, given what you have posted, I would say the anchor pin for the lower end of the servos has come apart and the pump servo dropped down and has gotten wedged in the forward position.
 
Hey kent i can work on the stuff. just never been around a hydro. splitting the tractor or stuff like that is no problem. was just trying to see if there was an easy fix. it is pretty reasonably priced. but with a bad tranny
 
It depends on how badly you want a hydro, and how much time/$ you want to spend on them. I love old red tractors but I wouldn't go near a hydro personally.
