Hey,

I see ALOT of different styles of seat pans on Ms and Super Ms.

I see you can buy seats in black, silver, red and white, canvas covered, ones with "jute, woven looking material on them, and some WITHOUT covering!

About ALL die cast scale models of Super Ms I see have a SILVER cover on them.

I think my 53 had the white or "cream colored" looking material in it that was "weaved". (like an old lawn chair that had "webbing" on it!)It still has the same seat pan that had some trace elements of that material, but I run a padded cover on it now.It also bolts on with 4 studs on the bottom of it.(I see some seats that have 2 slotted"slider rails" on the bottom.Dont know what these are for???

I guess I am rambleing here, but my question is,what is correct??? Did EARLY Ms run a different kind of seat than my LATER Super M? Were different colors available from IH???

Give me details!you guys know how I like detailed feedback! :)

Originally black canvas. Later white canvas, none sold from the factory with red and white. Going backwards, Super M original seat with large spring under seat and shock in front of spring. Later SM seat (stage 2) had battery box under seat. Later H/M seat same as Super M, prior to that was a Monroe seat as an option that had the large spring, but large shock behind spring. Standard seat at that time was a curved pipe with small spring in front and small tool box under seat attached to the pipe. These may have been standard into the early 50's, don't know when the large spring seat became standard. Original seat in 1939-40 was similar, but not quite the same, made to go with the "slot top" transmission cover -- I have not seen one of those in person. Diagrams in the parts section of CaseIH.com will answer a lot of your questions.

Yes Sir !,

Saw them in Black on EBAY! The seat material was black, and where it was crimped around the edges was red !!!! looked cool!(Know it aint factory!)

I was wondering what colors/materials came out what years ?????

Don't think anyone sells black--I only mentioned black because I believe it has been confirmed on this forum by a couple of people who should know. I have never seen one as canvas only lasts a year or so of daily use.

Black and silver were the ONLY colors. There is some controversy on when silver replaced black, or whether they were sold at the same time. I don't think the people buying them in that period were concerned, they were just happy to get a tractor.

Yep, all the styled Farmall seats up until about 1946 had a dark gray canvas covering with about 1/2 to 5/8ths of an inch jute padding. Then came a couple of years of silver duck cloth covering with the jute padding, then the thicker, softer, foam rubber padding with the silver duck cloth covering. The very first H and M seats were a two piece channel support frame that mounted with a cross pin to a mounting bracket having a big compression spring bolted to the flat rear end cover that had the depressed area in the middle to clear the seat channel to come down in it if the spring was severly loaded and compressed. In 1940 the two piece channel seat support frame was replaced by a curved tube of about 2 1/2 inch outer diameter mounted to the lower bracket with a similar cross pin and suspended by the same type of big compression spring. The big cast rear end covers then were totally flat. Both styles of seat frame had a sheet metal sort of U-shaped panel bolted in the arch of the frame to form a sort of open topped box to hold tools or spare parts like drawpins and clevises...or a spare pack of chewing tobacco. Well, that's what I often saw in ours. IIRC, the fancy Monroe type seats came along about 1948. These really good seats had the tapered coil spring directly under the seat butt bucket, the first ones had a shock mounted in back on the longer seat frame which extended up behind the seat. The later ones had the shock mounted down in front of the coiled spring mounting and the frame ended under the seat bucket. Oh, I almost forgot...the first Monroe seats didn't flip over like the older seats. The latest "Super C" type seats were mounted on the platform mounted battery box tops used on Super C's, Stage II Super M's, Super H's and Super MTA's. You could get a flip-over bracket thing to enable you to be able to flip over these seats or move them back if you wanted to stand on the platform. Hope this all makes sense.

I remember things like CNKS and was around a lot of new Farmalls in the late 1940's and early 1950's and never saw anything except the silver canvas seat coverings. Darrell Darst will cover your original IH seats with original pattern woven canvas material and finish in silver or black. Send him your seat pan (no reproductions), he will cover and return your original seat in black or silver as you desire. He has covered every seat on my restored tractors and has done probably well over a couple thousand by now. Darrell is a past president of the national International Harvester Collectors Club who sponsors the Red Power Round-up every year. If you desire to go that route and need contact informaion I will be happy to provide, Hal.

MIKE, The 1939,40,41 were black. We had a new 42 H that was black also.As I remember the black faded out after a few years especially if tractor sat outside. Black still used through 49 . In 1950 ih came out with the silver seat . They called it SILVER SHADE, supposed to be cooler to sit on than black.Back to the seat assembly, the 39 and 40 thru middle of year had a metal bar sprung on transmission cover like pipe seat. A big heavy spring about 5 inch,es tall. The spring allowed the bottom of seat bar to go down into the trans. cover to allow for up and down movement. This bar had a bar pointing up and slightly back at top and the seat could be tilted back to stand up when driving. This is the first rail seat. One rail on each side allowed this tilt-back. This seat also had a squareish tool box under it.In middle of 41 this seat and top of trans. cover changed to the flat cover and curved 2" curved pipe with same kind of slider seat , and also hooked to the heavy spring to trans. flat cover by gear shift.1947 Ih came out with the four bolt easy ride seat assembly with the conical spring and a big shock behind it. This was a special seat and cost more . Old pipe seat still standared. In 1950, big shock removed and little shock put in front of conical spring. I beleive this seat made standardat begining of 53 till live high hydrolics came in 1953, then seat sat on the battery which had to be moved for oil tank in front under gas tank.Regular pipe seat withrail to throw seat back was still standart up through probablly 1952.NONE OF THE BIG COIL SPRING SEATS COULD BE TILTE BACK AND DID NOT HAVE A TOOL BOX. Mayby in 53 the extra cost tilt accessry for seat allowed to tilt back showed up. Sorry for such a long answer, but almost necessary. This is all to the best of my memory. An old man's. Buck

Mike; I forgot to say , that in 1968 when I bought my 46 H , IH dealer had the special seat with shock in fron of spring sitting in showroom and when I bought the tractor from him I asked about it since mine still had the old pipe seat. They wanted $45 for it. The cover was a cream white cushion and entire seat assembly was painted black. Didn't buy it. Too much money then and didn't like the black paint. Ha Ha , the seat pan its self is about $120 today. Buck

Curved pipe seat after it came out was listed as the standard seat on on M and SM tractors up to Stage 2 SM. Probably be hard to find a SM one that way at this date.
Another option that ended up on some after Stage 2 came out is pictured.

Buck in 1962 the IH parts and accessories book had the hydraulic seat for a special price of $33.82. Included mounting bolts, starter switch lever and a trip rope clip.

Looks nice

Picture of hydraulic seat in 1962. Must have a different cover than the replacement Buck looked at. In the other post I was wanting to say it would probably be hard to find a pipe seat on a SM at this date. I made it sould like I was including M tractors also.

D. SLATER; Thanks D. for your usual good info. I had forgot the " Korasel" name and the pix is just what I looked at, but painted black. I Bet I lwould have bought it if it was red and $33. I know I would. Just a sad note, the 46 H Burned up last march durning one of our notoris grass fires here in okla. Lost whole barn down to ground and all equipment. It had never sat out since 1968. It did have a 1951 H deluxe seat I put on about 20 yrs. ago, but back then all you could get was the red and white seat. I did save the 52 SM and 39M which is all torn down now and putting new sleeves pistons and all that stuff plus all new valves and head work.Have black seat for it. Ha. This tractor was next to barn and I was able to get SM on it and drag away from fire. Saved from burning up . Only one tire caught on fire. . County fire boys saved it. Good to talk to you and all others on net . Thanks for all help in past. I'm 75 now and the 39 M will be my last tractor to save, Kinda sad, I worked these old M's a lot in the early 50's. At least I have these two left. Buck
