some quick work on the H

Got some quick work onthe H this am before heading off to work.

I was overjoyed to find that most of the 'leaks' were maintenance / lack of maintenance issues.

Loose petcocks, loose oil filter, oil bath cup.. stuff that was letting oily dirt collect.. etc.

gas line had a leak.. 1 drain plug had a drip.

I think I actually got all the leaks staunched, or 90% under control.

man those wheel weights are heavy. had to slide them off the trailer and drop eminto the pasture, then roll them to the barn.

the bolts for em will likely need some chasing.. but looks like everything is in the bag.. heads don't look beat up or rusted off.. loks almost as good as the ones on my C.

will have to lookup the sn, am thinking mid 40's.. say 43-45.. had a lil cheater paper with me that ya'll posted with some of the suffixes.. etc.. and i hand jotted some sn ranges down out of the manual, but it was near dark when i got there.. so.. I'm glad to say that she even looks better in the light.

have pulled the hood off.. regulator is twitchy. if you rap on it with a screwdriver handle it will charge for a few seconds.. then go back to discharge.

appears to have had the genny vonverted to 12v.. has a 12v bat and coil, and reg is new and marked 12v. genny shows signs of rework within 'recent' time. bushing/bearing in genny feels good if you spin the pulley by hand.

regualtor has 2 screws holdignthe cover on.. might see if one of the contacts is bent or not tweaked right in the field or cutout..

she felt a lil odd being backed off my deckover gooseneck.. when i trailer her again I may back on.. :)

wife left for lakeland for a teachers conference and snagged the camera.

I'll try to get a cell phone pic if I can figure out how to get it uploaded out of the phone memory.

oh well.. headed out a couple cities north myself for work. just stopped for a drink and tank drainin' :)

When you get around to changing that oil filter, make sure to dig the old rubber O ring out of the groove and install a new one. If that O ring has been in there for awhile, it will probably come out in pieces and you'll need to do some digging and scraping to get ALL of it out. A new O ring comes with the new filter. Use it.

If you get H or M filters from NAPA make sure they have the gasket. I had a rude surprise when I got home and found none in the box and had to go back and order separate gaskets.

dont touch the reg.as of yet being 12v may need a extra wire and switch to show charging cond.it needs to be exicted as you would a alt.I am not near my H were I can tell you the right I can you this one hooks from extra switch to amp gage.if its mag. ign.if not can be hooked to batt. ign.switch since mentioned coil then do not add extra switch.I will be back this eve. with info. welcome to the H&C ser.those wt.are 145lbs ea.acording to IHs manuel JOHN.

I stopped buying filters from anything but CNH. By the time you buy the filter and then go to CNH for the d/o ring you might as well buy everything there. Like I always say, if you don't buy anything from the dealer they won't be there next time you need them.

it's not a gen with a cutout that needs a tickle switch.. it's a full fledged voltage regulator and generator.. 3 wire job.. and the ammeter is wired correctly.. shows discharge of lamps and ignition, and if you full field it, it shows charge, or if you rap on the regulator can it shows charge. IE.. the fild circut contacts are sticking open or not making contact.

simple open and shut case... no mystery there.. vregs aren't magic or anything...

hopefully just the contacts need cleaning, ( like a set of distributor points) some very fine emory and a business card for cleaning.

HMMMM I just got all the new filters for my 1206 from NAPA and the O rings came with em. I only buy the Gold series.

The filters I buy at Walmart always have the o-ring as well. Same with the ones from Tractor Supply (TSC) and the ones I buy online too. In my experience, the filter is usually shrink wrapped with the o-ring inside the wrap with the filter. If someone is selling them separately, I'd be inclined to believe that they are pulling the o-ring out of the package and just trying to rip people off.

Forgot to add that the ones I get are made by Fram.

(quoted from post at 22:29:51 01/17/12) my napa filter had an oring with it as well.

NAPA may have wised up, because the last filter I bought (about 10 years ago) did NOT have the gasket, and they could NOT get the gasket.

My Carquest ones recently HAVE NOT got that square cut ring with them!Earlier ones did.

Wonder how they could start to NOT be sending those ?????

Basically because there are way too many folks involved in the manufacture, packaging, and distribution process that do not have a clue as to what an H Farmall IS, let alone having any knowledge as to the correct oil filter.
