governor surge on O-6

Need some info on an O-6 governor, it surges at an idle. Checked tube at carb end and is in place correct. Checked tube above gov. and seems to be correct, not a lot of wear. Pulled cover on gov. and spring is in place but not tight approx. 1/4 to 3/8 of play and spring coils are tight to each other. Spring does not appear to have been bent.

Have adjusted carb and does not change. I do not know any history on this tractor, taken in on trade not running.

Thanks for your help.

???? possibly the carburetor needs a good cleaning?? Just a theory, but if the idle circuit is dirty or partially plugged, the engine will attempt to die when the throttle is placed in the idle position, and the governor is trying to compensate to keep the engine running. Another theory is that the governor is just flat worn out.

Bob - With the engine warmed up and idling at slow idle, very SLOWLY pull the choke closed. If you find a choke setting where the idle smooths out, problem's a lean idle mixture.

If it cannot be corrected by turning the idle mixture screw IN, the carb idle circuit is plugged (turning the screw in richens the mixture). Only fix is to go inside the carb and clean it out.
