Covert H to an Alternator

You guys have helped me get my old H back orginal with a 6 volt positive ground. In the interest of getting a little more use out of the old tractor I would like to covert to a 12 volt to use with a sprayer. I have read several posts on this forum about such a coversion but can"t find the room for such a coversion without notching the hood. Heaven forbid!! Does anyone have a clear photo of such a coversion? Thanks in advance for your help!

I used a Hitachi alternator, Fits great. Search the archives as there are lots of good posts. Picture is of my Farmall 350. H & 300 are a couple generations apart but very similar.

Thanks Sound Guy! I considered this option too but generators and regulators are pricy. I am hanging on to my new 6 volt parts should I decide to put it back orginal. Since I am working on a budget and have all the 12 volt parts minus an alternator that might work in the limited space. I would have to buy both the generator and regulator to covert using a generator.

I have a Delco alt. under the hood of mine. Its tight, but nothing is cut. there are kits available to do this. I had to use a diode system to get it to charge as it didn't turn fast enough to self energize

Thanks Dean! I like the looks of this setup. What model is the Hitachi alternator in the picture? What type vehicle does this fit. My parts guy unfortunately will not bother to research much for people like us. His first question is always "what is it on?" Does this model require a regulator?

Thanks Rusty, Dean and Sound Guy! I appreciate your help! I love these old tractors but need to get some use out of them to justify keeping them around. Besides, while I appreciate the show tractors my real joy is to use the old H. I grew up on an H and M. The first M I drove I had to stand to steer and reach the clutch. I couldn't have been more than 8 or 9 years old at the time. That was fifty years ago!

The GM 10SI 3 ire ill indeed it under the hood of an H ithout cutting the hood. It's tight but it fits.

I used a Delco, mounted it on the left side and left the generator in place in case I ever decide to switch it back. I used ford 8N alternator brackets bolted to the governor housing. Even used the same belt.

A few other things you might want to keep in mind when buying your alternator are that a 3 wire will charge at lower RPM. That is pretty nice when you can run your tractor at an idle and it charges. I just went through this with my 9N. You will need a couple things to finish it though. A diode keeps the battery from draining, and you'll need a "GM alternator repair plug" And it is what you'll run your wires from.
Try the link here and this is what I made my conversion for my Ford. It should work for a Farmall too.

As a matter of interest, are most of these machines fitted with coil ignition? All my tractors have magneto ignition, so I don't have the slightest desire to change over to 12 volts. I usually crank start them anyway and only use the starter motor if the tractor is being stubborn and won't start by hand. In the case of the Farmall M, this generally occurs when it starts, runs for three or four seconds and then cuts out. After that, either I have to use electric start or wait fifteen minutes, return and begin again. Happily this is a rare occurence.

To "add" more comment about the 10SI Delcos. You can use either 3 OR 1 wire hook up,but like "Fullers Farmalls posted father down, you could have a LOW rpm charging issue if you do not get the CORRECT !!!! 1 wire Delco.

They do make the 1 wire Delco voltage regulator in a "LOW TURN ON ". I would want to know this info before I bought a one wire Delco alternator.

My Delco currently has a STANDARD 1 wire regulator in it.It will only start charging when I get the engine RPMs in the upper end.If the voltage regulator quits me in the near future,I will be installing a "low turn on" voltage regulator to replace it!

This hitachi has internal reglator and starts charging at low speed. I like that its only 30 something amps since I only have original type lights and the charging to handle. Got carried away on the mounting so I could remove a bolt from each end and slide it off the lower mount. Have 1/4 inch clearance between engine and alternator. Enough between body and hood for more adjustment.

PLEASE DON"T CUT THE HOOD!! So many H"s and M"s hoods were sacrificed by tin snips or a cutting torch to the hood...

If you turn the generator bracket upside down, you will see how to make it fit under the hood using the same belt.. Works pretty slick.

The Hitachi alternator is a #14231 model and was used on some late 1970's Nissian Pick-up trucks - I can look up the model numbers if necessary but think someone already posted one of the models. Hope this helps, Hal.
