Torque Amplifier

400LP

I have a 400 LP that the TA is bad i was wondering if i could replace it my self i know you have to split the tractor to get it out. I was going to buy a re manufactured TA and install it my self. I have all the original manuals but they don't really tell you anything.

The TA is actually a DOUBLE split. Split at the bell housing, then remove the TA housing to get at the TA.

You're not going to find a concise step-by-step, because the documentation was meant for experience mechanics.

What do you have for tools? Do you have a shop? Do you have a cherry picker? Do you have splitting stands?

Most of all, do you FEEL that you can handle the job?

I did a single split on my MD and I wouldn't be at all shy about doing the double split on my SMTA. Like MKirsch said that doesn't mean you can do it.

I had to steal the stands from my buddy who built them for me/him. I used my good friends heated shop to work on it and it took two months of weekends to do the job. They had a decent set of tools so that was not a problem. They also fed me lunch everyday. I should add a lot of the extra time was doing the headgasket as well as the ring gear. I could do it twice as fast now.

I don't know if it will help or not but someone gave me one of these videos several years ago and I watched it. Interesting and should give you some perspective on what is involved.
TA Repair Video

You can do it.Its not htat hard-alot of work,but not hard.Watch the video,read the book,you will be fine.I've done two on a dirt floor-a challenge!If you hit a snag,ask here-we are to help!Go for it!Steve

i just did this on my 450LP im restoring. the biggest thing your gonna need are splitting stands and a cherry picker. tools you are goin to use are pretty basic. this was my first TA job ever (i collect mostly pre 39) and didnt find it bad at all, just time consuming to do the splitting and such. I did mine in about 2 full 8 hr work days start to finish

ill get the pics off ym phone and put them up to show you how its gonna get split

heres some pics.

when you get the TA section up where you can work on it remeber you have to take out all the main clutch parts, and the TA throwout bearing shaft out before you try and tak eit out.

have to point out again how critcal splitting stands and a cherry picker are!!

I overhauled the TA on my SMTA. I had the Blue Ribbon repair manuel, IT amnuel and parts book. All helped out as there is a bold you can't see in there.
Now looking at your pictures I think what I was missing was the white cat.

Hey,Where does that cat come into play on the T/A????? (NOT seeing any "feline" pictorials/Part #s in my IH manuals parts "break down"??? ;)

shes counter ballast for the TA housing while its on the cart. she plays a pivitable role in many shop procedures

The most annoying and challenging part to me was installing the new TA past the large seal without damaging the seal. IH shows how to make a seal cone out of metal with 1/16" shoulders all around, but I don't have a metal working lathe. It would be interesting to hear how others did it.
