Super MD Water Trap

I have the water trap off my Super MD for cleaning and there's a 3/8" brass plug loose inside the screen. I think it goes in the "side outlet" of the boss that the fuel comes through as it flows into the bowl, but I see no reason for this "side outlet" hole that has to be plugged if I'm right about how this thing works.

Looks to me like fuel flows straight through this center boss and into the bowl through the 4 holes in the base of the screen, then from the bowl through the screen from the outside in, then out the top to the other fuel filters.

Am I on the right track here? Does this brass plug go in the side hole of this boss inside the screen, and force the fuel to take the route I described?

If you're talking about the fuel bowl, that might have come off a earlier distillate tractor, as the small gas fuel tank line went into that port, so that that tank was also filtered & water sump.

He's talking about a Super MD. It is a gas start diesel tractor. He does mean the water trap. Diesels don't have fuel bowls.

I'm not sure what you are talking about. I will check out my MD parts diagram to see if it is the same.

the fuel goes from outside the screen to inside of screen and to the aux. filter. i dont know of any brass plug inside the screen.there is a vent screw on the outside of the housing. if there is a place for it in the screen then it must have fallen out. should be able to figure it out by turning fuel on and watch how it flows.

I put the plug where I think it has to go. Just out of curiosity, I wish I knew why the water trap base was cast with this hole in the first place.

Yes thats it, a lot of them are missing. Without study of one I just thought it was so a passage could be drilled when made.
Went to bed before you answered last night.

Yes, after looking again, it's for drilling the passage for the incoming fuel from the filter base. Without the plug, the fuel is not required to pass through the screen. If a lot are missing, I wonder if I should try to epoxy that thing in there?
