Farmall 450 Gas Tachometer plastic gear

Hello,
I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction, website to get a new plastic tachometer gear. I we wondering why the cable was not spinning and found this in my inspections.

I've been searching around the internet, but can only find the Tach or the cable, but nothing else.

Thanks
Tony

As long as the teeth are in good shape that would be
good. Not too far away either. What is the name
of the yard, and I will give a call.

Thanks
Tony

I got one for customer about 5 years ago at CaseIH but needed the adaptor it fit in and could not find one of them.

That type gear and housing was discontinued. Gear and shaft that replaced it has metal on the shaft. It uses a housing thats smooth on the outer edge instead of the tooth type in the picture. If you can find a used gear housing and retainer I think you can still get the gear to fit it new. been a few years since I looked for the gear, part # 369365R1 or R91. Best to look for a used housing on late 58 or newer tractors or any thats been replaced.

Hello D Slater,

I saw a post from you back in May 2010, with a picture of a new housing and and old one like mine with the tooth type.

I was thinking about ordering a new gear with the steel shaft and modifying it. You mentioned you did. Did it work out well for you? Did you have to take it to a machine shop for that?

Thanks
Tony

Just look up Dale Cantaberry (not sure on spelling last name)
Some place I have his card, a really nice guy to deal with.

I'd just wait until a distributer from a 240, 404, 504 comes up on eBay. Shouldn't take long. May even be something available today. Buy the whole thing for $50-$100. If no good, send it back under the eBay Buyer Protection Plan for a full refund and original shipping.

Try to get the seller to indicate condition of tach gear prior to closing.

I just looked this up on cnh parts, the old part number[369694R91] subs to 369692R1,369695R1,and 369693R1. I recently [in the past 6 months] got the plastic gear for my 400D and it fit the housing I had,but I do not remember whether the old one was plastic or metal shaft.

Tony, my TC-53B parts catalog for my Farmall 240 shows the part no. for that part as 369695R91. Don't know if it is plastic/nylon or metallic but is noted as having 32 teeth. I do have a drive unit from a Farmall 404 (a later tractor then the 240 which uses the same part nos.) and the gear in that unit is non-metallic also. I don't have any confirmation that the part went from plastic/nylon to metal as noted in another post on certain models or on a certain date. Hope this helps, Hal.

Tony can't remember for sure now. Think I reduced the shaft size at the first diameter behind the gear and shimed behind the gear face.
I fixed that tractor to sell so don't know the long term results. Had several old housings and several of those were worn enough that the gear would go in but way to loose. Think I just chucked shaft in a drill and used a file and emory cloth to do it.
Good thing I write some things down because I was wrong. Reduced first diameter behind gear .026. left middle diameter the same. Reduced next diameter .033. All depends on what your housing measures on how much though. Two notched housings were used. First one was so soft it would wear fast. Next one was harder and sized more acurate. Two plastic gears were also used before the steel shaft. Last plastic gear shaft was .002 smaller diameter. Box I got the last steel shaft gear in is 369695R91. IH used to sell the gear, housing and retainer all together under #369694R91. Don't think the housing 369692R1 or retainer 369693R1 is available anymore.

Put a new one in my 450 this last spring. Got mine from Bates Corporation Bourbon, Indiana ( 1-800-248-2955). I had to buy housing and gear. New gear will not fit old housing.

About 10 years ago I also bought two tach drive gears from Bates Corporation. I think they were metal. I used one on a 450-D without changing the housing. I will check my spare and see if it is metal or plastic. So at one time they did have a direct replacement. Al

Did the 450 D already have the late housing. IH started installing them on 450 in january of 1958. Several previous models would have them if repairs were done several months after that or later.

The 450-D I changed it on was serial #12407 so it would be a 57. I also have a 300 & 400 gas which I think have original tacks so will check if the housings look the same. But it could have been replaced before I got it. Al

Tony, Was looking at eBay this evening and I came across a new listing that ends in 7 days which appears to be the part you are looking for. The item no. is 280808631473. Do a search using the item no. or on Farmall 450 tach drive and you should be able to find it if you are still looking for one. Good luck, Hal.
