IH 464 Coil voltage?

Is there suppossed to be a voltage drop between the key and the positive side of coil? Had some wires burn up. Old wire was sending 7.5 volts but tractor would not start. Only starts when 12 volts to coil. Burned up points after a few days. Added resistor to get around 6 volts tractor won't start. By-pass resistor and tractor starts? Stumped and confused, any help? Thanks in advance. Ray

The original wire to the coil was probably a resistor wire. The starter solenoid usually has a resistor bypass on it to do as you are now.

Beat me to it Jim, :}. On the starter solenoid there should be a large wire from battery, a small wire from key(switch) to energize the solenoid(starter) and a small wire to power side of the coil. This small wire should supply 12 volts to coil for starting when solenoid is engaged. The coil voltage when running should be supplied thru a resistance (wire or resistor) from the ignition switch. Might be worth investing in a new solenoid as the internal connections some times corrode.

Ok, thanks. Evidently I bypassed the wire from the selenoid when I re-wired some things. Now I gotta figure all this out.

I gonna check that wiring diaghram because when I take the 12 volts away while it is running it stalls. I placed a jumper cable from the battery to the coil while I had the resistor hooked up on the wire from the key to coil.

If you replaced the coil wit a 12volt coil no resistor needed, it will act like that. The coil needs to be for 12v external resistor required. Jim
