Super M Charging Question

I have a 1953 Super M that has a 12 volt alternator. The amp gauge doesn't seem to move. How do I check to see how much voltage is coming out or if the gauge is any good?

If you have a multimeter the easiest way to see if it's charging is to measure the voltage between the two posts on the battery. If it's higher when running then it's charging. Sam

Check for voltage at the battery it should read 14.5 volts with tractor running or you can check it on the back of the alt. should read the same either way.

Best way is with a "hold against" amp meter. These check charging current by holding them against the wire. You don't have to break the circuit to check charging current. I also use an ammeter with a short 2-wire cord with alligator clips on the ends. This requires pulling a wire somewhere in the circuit & attaching the clips to read charging current.

If you have a one wire system (not my favorite BUT THEY CAN WORK) Some one may have installed the output wire directly to the battart at the start switch. the amp gauge would then only read discharge. It is usual to connect the output to the load side of the amp meter. If it is a 50+ amp alternator, I would put in a new 60 amp or greater amp gauge. Jim
