McCromick W6 is a mess

So I bought this tractor on E-B-A-YYYY because the steering and shifter are super tight. Also the bearings in the pulley are nice and smooth. Also, it was sitting out side and it moved so I knew it had not been sitting outside long or it would have been full of ice and would not have moved. Well I got it home and I was right about one thing. The tractor had always been greased and well maintained. The challenge is the engine. It looks like someone took the head off about 20 - 30 years ago and let the engine sit in a damp shed. Too bad because the crtankahaft has .002 rods and STD mains. I removed the pulley to get the engine out and what I can see of the gears in the transmission are real nice. I has that old black oil that everyone used in those old tractors. It coats like tar. I do have an original hand crank as well. The starter has an updated starter drive. The ring gear is beautiful. SO many positives. IT has a seat like a SW6TA. Unfortunately there are some parts missing. So when I add it all up between some missing parts and the condition of the engine this one is going out the door in pieces. I have no idea what the market for W6 parts is like. Is there a demand for W6 parts out there?

one never know what to do when they see so many negatives,,but they looking at other done projects makes you think, hum, maybe i should tackle it...flip the coin,,if you decide to part out, i'm sure a lot others would like parts from,,i would like the pto cover to put on mine, and maybe the seat assembly...my pic of my w-6, of course, you can make to look like all the ones i see on other threads...

The tractor looks restoreable to me, if I'm not mistaken it's the same engine as an M so parts should be easily available.

My problem is once I get a tractor torn down to repair I know I have it at it's most valuable stage. I have a hard time convincing myself to put it back together. Scrap is high too. And I figure every one that is scrapped makes those left living worth more. But yeah, tight and good as you say. I'd be tempted to push it in a dark corner of a shed and sit on it. I'm doing that with a few.

I have a complete running engine out of a W6 that was gone thru for sale.We are parting out this tractor and it is taking forever. That tractor looks salvageable.

Email if you are interested in the engine.

Please DO NOT knock another fine W6 in the head and send it to China. If the project is more than you want to do, sell that tractor for what you have in it and let someone else enjoy putting life back into a piece of American history.

That one's too nice to knock in the head Larry. Lots of C248 engines out there that you could drop in there.

Where you at? Somebody will come take it off your hands.

It looks like a very straight, good W-6 to me and shoulod be an easy restoration. If you don't want to restore it, sell it to someone who does. Don't part it out. They definitely don't make tractors like that any more.

Mine looked like that also when I started missing a ton of things, bad fenders and all I did a total restore 10 years or better and it still makes every parade and tractor ride and they are a bear to drive but something to be proud of when your done good luck.

The list of things I see:
Battery box
Fenders need to be fixed, but can be fixed
Steering wheel
Muffler
Precleaner

With the exception of the precleaner you show me ANY tractor that is being restored that doesn't need that.

That looks like a nice original tractor to me. I'd get the pistons out and hone the cylinders and see how they clean up. It may not be as bad as you think once everything is cleaned up. A few minor pits in the cylinders isn't a big deal. You might get it running without spending a lot of money. These aren't high speed, high performance engines so they are a little more forgiving.

(quoted from post at 17:52:35 01/17/12) I got it apart. One of the cyclinders was so bad the sleeve came out with the piston.

GOOD!! Now all you need to do is peel that sleeve off the piston so you can salvage the wrist pin and connecting rod. Much easier than pulling the sleeve.

Good deal. My WD-9 project is not going so well. I broke all four sleeves in my parts motor while disassembling the motor. (You can't buy WD-9 parts so you have to find NOS or good used parts or get them custom made)

Just a tip, a lot of guys still use the antique forum system that doesn't bump your thread up to the top when you post on it. If you want to get more views you are better off making a new thread.

Or just join the 21st century and use the modern version.

I don't disagree...but you know how (most) old men are

Just one?javascript:emoticon('') Now you can try heating the sleeve up and getting the piston out of it. I still wouldn't give up on the sleeves until you hone them out and see how they look. I've put Regulars and F-20s together with pitted sleeves, they run great, have good compression and don't smoke at all. You have to know where to draw the line though.
