Hi everyone going to look at orignal one owner 56 farmall 300 with fast-hitch and tach with orignal rubber. looks like real nice clean tractor in pictures. not familar with ta"s or this model tractor what should i look for in this 1956 farmall 300 ??????? Thanks Jim

With a TA you want to make sure it works well in all gears and that you can push the clutch down and shift out of gear with out having to move the TA lever to get it out of gear.

At 56 years old, the whole tractor is a potential "weak spot" due to simple wear and tear.

The most common thing to be worn out, aside from tires, is the TA. A good TA will pull in all gears with the brakes applied.

Good mechanical TAs will also hold the tractor from rolling backwards on a hill with the TA lever ahead and the clutch pedal pushed down just enough for the engine to stop driving the tractor. If it rolls, your low side is out.

Brakes often don't work well either. That is a lack of maintenance, not a real weak spot.

If you have to move TA lever to get tractor out of gear, that is just an external (ten minutes or less) adjustment.

I Like Mine!! No real weak spot as far as I'm concerned. DO your due diligence before you buy and you should be ok. I pd $2500 for mine with ok rubber and new semi pro paint. Has fast hitch and power steering. I did some minor repairs in the last year which was simply maintenance.

I figure I can due some major repairs and still have far less invested than buying new.

Thing to check are the T/A as mentioned, engine rear seal leaking, main clutch, governor operation, brakes. The hydraulic pumps are bad about needing seals, it will either pump hydraulic oil into the distributor, or hydraulic oil into the crankcase, or not have enough power to lift an implement.
The hydraulic remote tower usually leaks between the valves or at the top or base gasket.
Live PTO check operation , the seal between the rear end & the sun gears usually needs replacing leaks rear end oil into the unit & it pukes oil out of the breather.
Check hydraulic cylinders for bent shafts, check tightness of pivot points on the fast hitch for looseness. Front wheel wobble in road gear.

These all will need some sort of attention due to the tractor's age, they really aren't weak points, but what I have encountered on the two I have owned. A little work, a bunch of o-rings & seals, adjustment here & there, it takes some doing, but once you get one right, you will be very pleased, they are a great tractor.

check the constant run gears for missing teeth. you can usually tell by listening for a knocking in the trans in all gears except fifth. they can also be seen by removing the belt pulley delete cover. the gear toward the back of the tractor is the one you want to check along with the one below that it meshes with. if those gears are bad it's a big job to fix and would be very expensive to have done at a shop. its about two full days work if you hurry.
