706 stuck in park?

What do you mean "stuck in park?"

This is not a common problem, so you're going to have to explain how it happened and what he's tried to do to get it unstuck.

The only time I can see the park lock being stuck is if the tractor is parked on a steep hill with a heavy load. In that case, you need another tractor and a chain to relieve the load on the tractor, so he can release the park lock.

Hopefully your friend is wise enough to not drop the park lever while the tractor is still rolling. If he drops it into park while the tractor is still rolling, something's broken now and it will need major work. The ratcheting noise is not normal. That is the sound of teeth being knocked off of gears in the transmission.

The pivot for the park lever is probably rusted up, or something is rusted up.

Unhook the linkage and see if the lever will move on its own. If not, you found your problem.
