Regular Questions

Got my new Regular when I was home over Christmas. A few questions have come to mind.

1. Did Regulars only have one hand brake handle? I thought the one on the right was missing but when I look at the axles there are not any bolt holes for the lock bracket

2. What is the shift pattern? Is it stamped anywhere on the transmission cover?

3. I see a lot of parts listed on Ebay as F20/Regular parts. Are most of the engine parts interchangeable?

I have a 1931 Regular. They only have one brake lever. On yours I don't see the pulleys on the front for the cable to run through to put the wheel brake on that correponds to the direction your steering automatically. I see the brackets back on the frame for the cable. Good Luck with the Regular as they are fun to drive. Mine is on steel all around.
 
1- yup, only 1 brake hand lever. the foot brakes in your pic are add ons, look home made.
don't see the cables for automatic turning. run from arm on rear of steering post, around the pulley below air cleaner, through the loop on rame rail & hook to brake arm with a spring, same on both sides. with them adjusted they really work nice.

Stock from the factory as 1 brake lever. 2nd one was an option. All parts from an F-20 are interchangeable with a Regular. However, if you want it "correct" and indicative of a regular, the main features are E4A magneto, open gears in the steering sector, down-draft exhaust, and potentially a bail wire retainer for the oil cup on aircleaner.

There are other items, but those are the most visible, and some of it depends upon the year of your Regular. The transition on some of those parts was gradual, and not a "it is now an F-20".

Your best bet is to get a parts book correct for the period, and it will indicate serial number change overs for the parts in question.
 
Regular has a H pattern. up and into the gas tank is reverse, up and back is forward, down and back is 2nd, and down and forward is light speed. Well maybe not light speed but snail speed? Slow walking speed?

Most things are interchangable; blocks, governors, clutches, carbs, governor tubes, manifolds, steering gearbox, transmission and trans-parts, fuel tanks, and fan may not be interchangable depending on the year of manufacture.
 
I have all the parts that are indicative of a Regular (I even have an extra E4A that I though would work with my W30).

On the air cleaner, It has the wire bail and I have the cup. Did oil go in the cup? The air cleaner is a bit different from the ones I have seen as it says something to the effect of Vortex Air Cleaner.
 
The seat is very interesting. Apparently you unbolted the flat steel from the differential and slipped it into the new bracket. I do worry about stopping too suddenly though.....
 
The steel does make it interesting. We had to unbolt the 3 outside lugs on both sides to get it to clear the fenders of the trailer. Might take all the outside ones off and reverse them (all on the inside) to make it easier to load when I take it to shows.
 
You might want to check your serial number. If it"s a 28 model it could be one of 402 that had a malleable iron countershaft housing. To my surprise I found out that mine is one of those and from the pic yours looks kind of like mine.
 
Those foot brakes are cool, I would like to have a set of those on my 27. The starting gas tank is missing on yours. Vortex is on my air cleaner also. You have the round knob hand brake handle which I believe indicates a later model. Something is different about the drawbar too? It would be great to see more pictures of that interesting machine ! I haven t seen a seat like that either. Regulars are fun to own and drive !
 
When you say "malleable iron countershaft housing" where exactly are you referring. Is there a serial number range that is indicative of this part? If so, what is the range?
 
The countershaft housing is the rear axle housing. the serial no. range is T35426 through
T35827. All the rest were made from cast steel. They ran a trial run in August 1928 that were made of malleable or cast iron. Evidently they weren't happy with the results, as they only made the 402.
 

What all parts do you need? Manifold, carb, fuel tank, throttle linkage, etc are specific to a Regular although F-20 parts can be installed. Long block, radiator, clutch (unless you have the early multi-disc clutch) are interchangeable. V-belt F-20s have a different head but it will fit.
Of course the steering gears are not interchangeable, and I don't believe any transmission parts are either as the Regular is 3-speed and 20s are 4-speed.
