More history about the German international engines (310)

My dad had a 706 international (1967) with a German built engine (310). I was curious if anyone knew the name of the German company that was contracted to build these engines and what made them unique (special?) over the previous model engines. Is the company still in operation? I remember our 706 engine running flawlessly.

Not sure, thought it was IH NEUSS.

I'm about 99.9% sure they were made only by IH at thier Nuess, Germany factory for IH and maybe a few of thier subsidiaries. Then the engines were shipped to the US, Australia ect... to be installed in what ever tractor, combine, or other application that IH used them for. International Harvester had plants in several countries around the world. They truly were "International". Read Ken Updike's book, International Harvester Tractors, 1955-1985. It is full of excellent pictures and loaded with very interesting history about many IH models built from 1955-1985. Ken has written several interesting articles in RED POWER magazine as well, some of which address the D-310 engine in tractors such as the 756. I have a '69 IH 756 with a german D310 in it. I love that engine. It has great response with the boost it gets from the M&W turbo on it! And it just sipps fuel, very economical!

I have a '67 706 with that engine.Awsome power plant.10,000+ hours(never been o'hauled),turbocharged,turning 96 hp,uses no oil. 'every day' user.Steve

My granddad bought two one in 1965 and one in 67, the earlier one has the old glow plug style engine great tractor to this day n really nice to use . A little rough to shift n likes to smoke on take off or throttling up,hince the name ol smokey. The second has 310 german d in it n its still a farm favorite, only problem is it gotten real sluggish n lacks power on fuel pump. Weve had pump worrked on and still not right ,would anyone know who can rebuild one right?

Got a '67 that dad bought new, first tractor he ever bought. Just did a full in frame overhaul, only has 3267 hours, got hot one time and old age I guess/ Nver did use oil or act up, just started slobbering oil out the exhaust bad. Always did, still does run like a watch, more power now though, main haying tractor and hauls in in the fall. Love it, goin to keep it!

International had its own engine plant in Germany
(as in a number of countries, continents). Hence IH,
now Navistar, made the engines.

The German diesels were made in 3 cyl, 4 cyl, 6 cyl. They made them in various sizes for hp they wanted, some of the cubic inch that I can specifically recall were D179 (3 cyl), D239 (4 cyl), D268 (4 cyl), D310/D358 (6 cyl), they also made reference to a DT402 (6 cyl Turbo) for a Tracked Excavator IF my memory serves me.
