Been Working on a A Farmall Thats been sitting for years and found the mag was firing in between cylinders.I was able to retime the mag by moving the gears inside the mag just by trial and error,What is the proper way of doing this,Is there any marks.I did it by feeling for compression and bringing the piston to TDC and watching # 1 plug fire.Im sure someone played with tractor before I started working on it

I take the mag off and rotate it to firing position then check if the rotor is lined up with the tower on the cap.

I bought new timing gears for an H4 magneto. They came with instructions which said to line up the timing marks on the gears. All very good had there actually been any marks. In the end I just set it up as you did. Got it close and then set the final adjustment by moving the magneto back and forth until it fired at the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley.
