Farmall 450 Gas Radiator repairs needed

Well, I found out what happens when you have too long a bolt just above the radiator and then start screwing it in. While tearing the tractor apart, I also found that the brace on the side seems to have come apart from the radiator

My basic questions are:

1. The color of the radiator is gold'ish, is that Copper or Brass or something completely different?

2. I was going to use an oxygen/acetylene torch to heat it up and Braze it. What type of rod do I need for the brazing.

3. Is that the best way to fix the puncture?

4. Can I use the same rod to braze/solder the side back together? There is no leak there, it just came apart.

Thanks for any information on this.

50/50 lead acid core solder and small brass shim will be all you need. If you use acetylene use a samll tip.

I am assuming Lowes or Home Depot will have the rod, but not 100% sure what the Brass shim is?

Is it something like a washer, without the hole?
And what is that for?

I was assuming just kinda puddling up the hole with the rod...??? Is that not a good idea?

Don't feel bad. I decided the screws that came with my bug shield for the new pickup weren't big enough, so I got longer and bigger sheet metal screws, raised the hood, and screwedd that baby right in place. Yep. Then closed the hood, could see what fine work I'd done.

i have used the brass grounding strips from big electrical plugs. cut it to length as needed. any brass patch to cover the hole and then solder it, like patching a tube.

A brass patch piece, preferably about one sixteenth in thickness cut to size. Clean by sanding with emory paper. Treat with flux. Use Kester's 40/60 acid core solder. Mapp gas should be hot enough. This is not a difficult process, you should be fine. Remember, the torch should not melt the solder, the metal you are soldering should melt the solder when you move the torch away and touch the solder to the radiator. Ellis
