Electric Tractor Heater

Is it safe to leave an electric water heater for a tractor plugged in continuiously? I have been told that the pressure will contiue to increase until a hose blows.

The radiator cap will allow pressure release before that will happen.
Do you have a timer you can use? You can find bargain Christmas light timers now.

NO, it will never get hot enough to hurt anything. Is it "safe"? No, there is always a risk that something could malfunction. I use a timer for mine but the timers you buy are at the limits of their capacity and eventually burn out. I have never found anything completely satisfactory. I've bought some expensive timers that did not last any better than the cheap ones. And a timer does limit you to when you can use the tractor. If I wanted a tractor ready to go on moments notice I'd consider heated storage.

Unless you live in super-cold climates, running the block heater for a couple of hours in the early morning, then again in mid-afternoon is usually enough to get the tractor running on a moment's notice.

I wouldn't leave the block heater running all the time. Dad had one burn the cord off a couple of years ago, and was lucky he didn't burn down the building. An inch one way or the other and it would've started a fire.

They do make good timers, or at least they did. We've been using the same one for at least 25 years, twice a day, every day.

I use heaters on our Automobile to assure starts (not this balmy winter so far) to prevent timer burn out on a 700 to 1200 watt device I found a winter rated 20 amp contact timer that seems very good. Jim

Another consideration: Here (western NY) a 1,000 watt heater running 24/7 will add $90 - $100 a month to your electric bill.

Better to spend a few bucks on a heavy duty timer and set it to turn the heater on a couple hours before you need the tractor.

I've had an Intermatic 20 amp rated mechanical timer controlling the 1,500 watt block heater on my F250 diesel for 6 winters now. It works great!
