I am sure this is covered butnot having any luck in the archives. What are the major diffrences between an A and B farmall. Seems like they are the same engine just diffrent seat and wheel configurations.

That it the sum total
The A lasted through the introduction of the numbered series (mid 50s) the offset allowed vegetable cultivation and was also common with Tobacco growers on the A. The wider stance and tricycle front allowed sharper turns and a with the BN, handier clearance side to side. Jim

The seat is the same, but the right hand axle housing is shorter on an A. That and the narrow front and there isn't really anything major. Don't forget the BN that was a narrower B.

That's actually a BN. It used the same axle tube as the A. The B used a wider one. An easy way to ID a B vs BN is the right side seat bracket. On a B there is space between it and the fender.

The B never came with hydraulics, as it was replaced by the C after a few years. Supposedly some late B's came with a provision for the hydraulic pump cast into the block.

The seat is the same, the battery came under the seat instead of hanging by the starter like in the top picture.

Other than the A had hydraulics available, and the extra /wider axle tube(s), and front axle/bolster, they are identical.

The A is set up to cultivate one row at a time.

The B is set up to cultivate TWO rows at a time.

That is the reason for the different wheel configurations.

I have one of the last Farmall B's that was built and its been in the family from day one. This one came from the factory with a C block and had a place to put a hydraulic pump. This B and all the B's I've seen have the battery mounted between the back of gas tank and steering post. The seat has a toolbox mounted under it.

That "axle tube" is not the same on an A & BN. The differential shaft housings are the same length on an A & BN (18"), but they are different castings. The BN differential shaft housing has the attachment points for cultivators cast into it, an A does not.

No A, B or BN had hydraulics available from the factory, that didn't happen until the Super A.

A's, B's, BN's & C's all came from the factory with the battery in front of the steering post, under the rear of the gas tank. You may be thinking of a Cub, which did have the battery under the seat.
