400 farmall

i am helping a friend get his farmall 400 running . been sitting for a few years now the clutch wont release....and easy way to brake it loose ???

It is running yet????

Get it running(if not yet.)Hook up something heavy behind it,like a loaded wagon Start it up in gear with it facing away from obstacles. (MAKE SURE YOU ARE IN A WIDE OPEN AREA!!!:)Drive it around for awhile, uphill is better!Randomly push the pedal in.It SHOULD come loose. They tend to stick when sitting for awhile.

With respect, A loaded wagon bothers me. I would prefer a plow, or disk that could be controlled. The wagon provides only rolling resistance and inertia. And the fear of not being able to stop, or slow rapidly if needed. Jim

Good point Jim,

I usually start grading my driveway when my clutch disc sticks.(It is up and down a hill.)

It will usually come loose in about 2 to 3 passes.

I agree, the only really good way I could see doing it is with a plow or some kind of tillage device. 2nd or 3rd gear, make her snort.

My tiling machine with a hand clutch was stuck so with the clutch disingaged I started driving it and in less that a block in came loose. That was the main clutch. The digging wheel clutch is still stuck and I have been lubing it with Break-A-Way (only better pent. oil is Kroil) and will soon start digging a trench with clutch out of gear. Keep the clutch totaly disgaged while doing this(with a foot clutch I would cut a 2X4 to hold the clutch disingaged). Good luck. Armand
