Starters dead, Need some advice!

Well, after changing the starter switch, new batt. cables...I have power at the ammeter, starter, generator, all over, the starter just wont turn, come to find out they had to push start it for the last 6 months before it was put away, soooo im looing at getting a new starter.

i have a 12 volt generator and VR....I found a rebuilt 6 volt starter that has been converted to 12 volt on ebay (Wynette auto parts in MI) for $155 with core charge ($115 once i send my core back)and my uncle has the same set up on his M and he loves it...plus it looks original with the 12 volt capabilites.

Does this sound like a good deal or should I go with the 6 volt NEW starter? I get a little nervous with rebuilt stuff, even when done by pros...Ive been told that the 6 volt starters work fine with the 12 volt system....any advice?

Thanks, Anthony

I agree with Jim, almost all areas have a local starter/alternator rebiulder shop with a good reputation, and it will likely be cheaper yet. 6 volt starters work fine with 12 volts fed to them, I have several operating that way and have for many years.

It's better to get a rebuilt starter, I had bought a "New" starter because of the same thinking as you, However the new starter is junk, still having intermittent problems with it, the reason, Made in India, go for the rebuilt!

If you still have the original DelcoRemy starter you are much better off getting it repaired rather than getting a new one.

The new starter will be made in China, the land of "almost right". There is no way to be sure you can get the parts to fix one of those.

We have a local rebuilder who has done a fine job for us over the years. I would ask around and see if there is someone of whom people speak highly.

Have the rebuilder use a new inertia cushion drive rather than the spring driven pinion, it is much more reliable especially on a ring gear with experience. Jim

I recommend rebuilding the one you got also!

They are WAY better starters than the "overseas" ones! It will last a L O N G time!

Like the others said, rebuild. You could get lucky and it might just have a hung up brush. Last summer I took a non-working VAC Case starter apart, cleaned it up and put it back together without replacing any parts. It ran like a top after the cleaning. The owner of the tractor had been hand cranking it for years cause the starter wouldn't work.

I have not, that is on tap for the next chance i get to work on it. we did loosen the bolts up and gave it a good shake just in case it was froze on the ring gear but it wasn't froze....i turned the engine also so i know thats not froze either....

Thanks for the help guys, I am going to try and get my starter re-built, i found a local electric motor shop that my uncle has done business with before.
