How do you remove the PTO seal on a 240 utility? Does the whole housing have to come off?
Thanks for any help.

i would just drill a small hole in the edge of it to match a sheet metal screw and use a slide hammer and pop it out. that one looks like it has a lip so can use a small chizel and hammer to get it out.

If it has the orginal seal you may have to remove the 6 bolts holding the entire casting to knock it out from the back side. I have spent a lot of time trying to pry out an orginal seal from around the shaft without damaging the sealing surface. The old ones were made much different than the replacements. They are thicker and tough to take out from the front. If the seal is a newer style they can be removed easily from the front with a screw and slide hammer.

Try the suggestion from rustred first. If that does not work, you can take the entire assembly off. However, knocking the seal out from the inside is not so easy. You'll have to remove the drive gear, shaft and bearings. YOu have to remove the drive gear before you try to remove the shaft. You can't just drive the shaft out after your remove the gear retainer bolt. The woodruff key will hit against the inner bearing race and prevent the shaft from going out. You will have to use a puller to remove the gear and then the woodruff key and then you can press or drive out the PTO shaft, then remove the bearings and press out the seal form the back side.
