air cleaner on 966

How do you get the air cleaner out of a 966. Is there a filter inside? Do you have to take the hood off. Our air cleaner gauge is always on Red The needle never seems to move. May be a bad gauge, but I want to check the aircleaner, I just cant figure out how it comes out with the hood on??

Yep ya gots to pull the left hood off then ya just unlatch the snap over lever and slide it out and pull the air filter element out and while your in there replace the small filter at the same time .

Rule of thumb:

If the gauge NEVER moves, bad gauge. If it "flutters" to red, plugged air filter or bad vacuum switch.

When IH started using the dry air filters, single element on the 7 and 806 tractors, we had a rash of problems. When they finally got a good double element system and hoses and clamps that sealed, and the precleaner baffle in front of radiator that reduced cleaning intervals, they still had damaged filters causing problems so they put the hood over them on 66 series. Lot of guys don't like the idea of having to take hood off but I believe it saved a lot of engines.
