Question on water pump packing

I got the packing nut off the H and have a question. Does the packing
stop the water leaking, or is that taken care of by the seal? I want to
make sure it does not leak again.

Both. The packing is important and needs to be adjusted tight enough to feel substantial resistance to rotation (like if the fan was spun it would only go around twice.) then backed off a little to allow it to be free, but not loose. Jim

The packing is the seal.

If you over grease the bearings the grease should come out the front by the fan. (The front seal should be installed with the lip forward to seal out dirt that is blown against it by the fan.) If you over grease the impeller shaft the grease will be forced into the cooling system.

the packing is the seal. feedwater pumps in boiler rooms hold hundreds of pounds pressure with just packing rings. fire pumps hold hundreds pounds of pressure with just packing rings. i have done plenty of them. they rely on a slow drip for lubrication where the h water pump uses a little grease for lubrication.

The fellas are correct on the seals and packing.
As to your question of grease, yes ,it helps. I have a 400 restoration and I rebuilt pump with all new ,kept having slight leak ,kepted adding packing and tightening nut to no avail.I hesitated on grease because I did not want fan dirty. Well, not until I shot grease few shots at a time ,did it stop.Been a year now and no leak or grease splatter. Tony
