Progress on the 400D

If I'm boring everyone, sorry. But I have to tell someone -- my cats just look at me. The following is the result of a lot of your suggestions, and a lot of studying.

Got the engine out. That last 2 inches had me nervous:

But, it just pulled right off without any complaint. Notice my homemade lift plates.

Got the flywheel off:

The tire suggestion and removing the pan and oil pump were followed to a tee. Don't pay any attention to the screwdrivers stuffed near the hoist hook. Had to put them someplace.

My next step is to take off the TA section and change all the seals except those internal to the TA (fairly new unit).

Took the block to the "block guy" to have him clean it, check for cracks, pull the sleeves, turn the crank, see if I can find some bearings or have them made, etc. Sure hope there are no cracks in the block. The previous owner NEVER changed the antifreeze.

And Jan----(sp), the valve seats required very little grinding, and the "head guy" said they were in good shape and I will have no problem with compression.

Let me know if you have a set of bearings made and the cost. I am
working on my 450, but is a slow process due to cost! The nice
thing is I plan to use it forever, so at least I know what I have when
I am done!

I'm glad you commented on that screwdriver in the chain - I almost fainted : ) Saw that and thought it was there as a pin to hold the leveling chain on!

Happy it all went well for you. Like most things, once you do it, you realize it's not a big deal.

And you can never bore us with pictures. post away.

I'll post on here what happens with the bearings. Probably be 2-3 weeks out.

I have a 400 gas that I really like. Independent PTO, live hydraulics, TA, power steering are all handy to have. A neighbor of mine has a 400 diesel sitting out in the trees rusting away, I have been trying to get him to sell it to me.

Good luck on your project!

Thanks for sharing pictures!
Good to see its progressing well.
Brings back good memories of restoring my 400 gas last year.
These 400's are great driving tractors.
Keep us posted!!!!
Best, Tony

I am in the process of having my SMD overhauled. My rebuilder was able to get all new bearings and everything else I needed. My motor was shot.

(quoted from post at 21:19:56 01/05/12) Nice, looks like a classy shop!

Wish it were my shop. Always wanted one like it, but wishin' doesn't seem to be getting one. You might say I kinda borrowed it for a while.
