I replaced my 12V coil on my Dads coverted to 12v SM. It a ceramic not oil filled, it gets fairly hot (around 120deg). My 450 is oil filled and never gets hot.I just wanted to know if anyone has noticed this or has a ceramic coil.It runs good and haven"t had problems so far. Is this normal?

Check the coil. If it is NOT labeled "No external resistor required" it requires an external resistor.

A coil that needs an external resistor will get HOT to the touch, uncomfortably hot, and will burn out eventually.

I will ad that a coil needing a resistor will measure about 2 to 2.5 ohms from + to - terminals. A coil not needing a resistor will read in the area of 3 to 4 ohms. Jim

sounds like a 6v coil that needs a resistor and is deceptively marked 12v w/ external resistance.

I'd get a napa IC14SB oil potted coil and go. native 12v ready.. no resistors.. etc.
