I have a 1945 Farmall A Cultivision, and the engine turns over but then seizes. It seized once I got it lose by putting the hand crank on in the front. I tried it again and it seized again, and I got it lose by putting it in gear and rocking it. I don't want to invest a lot of money in it to get it to run.

What should I do???

Sometimes that starter can make it lock up, mine did on my H soon after I got it because the bolts were loose. Next time it seizes pull the starter off and see if that helps.

I had a B that did almost just what you describe. When it would crank, I'd hear this clicking noise in the front of the engine. I pulled the governor off, found missing teeth on its gear and the camshaft gear. You're going to have to do some exploring to find out what your issue is.

Bet your not telling us the whole story are you??? Been sitting a long time?? You had some sort of other problem but have not told us??? Fill in the gaps and tell us all the info. If I had to guess I would say it sat a long time and you have rust in a cylinder or 2. Me I would fill trhe cylinders with ATF and let it sit a few days. Be sure to put the plugs back in to keep dirt etc out. Pull the plugs and try to spin it over. Ya it will shoot some ATF out but if it locks due to sitting a long time that should fix it

I worked on a c one time that had sat in a barn for 10-15yrs cranked it over and as soon as it went pop like it was going to start, carbon in the cylinders fell and stoped the engine,I backed up the engine, pulled the plugs and blue out cylinders, put back together and ran good. Disconect the coil wire and use the hand crank you'll be able to feel and hear whats going on. be carefull, stumper

Are you sure the starter isnt hanging up because of bad connections or junk battery clean all connections first after you are sure the battery is good cause engines dont sieze up then turn over with crank. You also mite have a bad ring gear next time it does that remove the starter and look at the teeth on the ring gear and look over the Bendix real good take it to someone who knows a good one from a bad one.

Remove the cylinder head and see what the cylinders/sleeves look like. If they look ok use your hand crank and see if still seize's. If you don't spend any money on your tractor advertise it on Classified Ads. Hal

agree with others on the starter. Some a's have a problem with the gear getting stuck on the starter that engages the flywheel.

I'd wait for it to lock up again like that - and without doing anything else, pull the starter and see if that's the problem.

A new nose gear doesn't cost much - you can find them anywhere.

And a very minor, non-related point - "cultivision" goes without saying when you call it call it an A.

cultivision refers to the offset seat - but they all had it. There were no non-cultivision A's.

So calling it a cultivision A is kind of redundant.

Not that it really matters. Might save you some typing though.

All my connections are clean and it sat for 5yrs.
I put Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinders.
I will see if it is the starter but I doubt.
It ran fine before I stored it.

something else is could be a stuck valve witch can be check by taking off the hood and the valve cover and watch. I would start by pulling the spark plugs and use compresed air and blow out anything that might be in there,to much oil in a cylinder will stop a motor in its tracks.
&with the plugs out see if it will turn over, and look and see with a little light if u can see anything, take care, stumper

Could be a valve sticking open and hitting the piston top. I would check valves first. No money involved --just your time..
