Need help identifying a rod (pic)

The rod is part of the radiator shutter controls. Many times the controls are left on the tractor years after the shutters are removed.

When I bought my H, it came with the very same set up only difference is the shutters were on it! After I freed the control rod up, it works like a gem! These were an attachment that could be special ordered and most commonly used on tractors that would plow snow in colder regions. It could be closed somewhat to keep warm air in and recirculating, and on a warm day, opened completely to allow regular air flow for engine cooling purposes.

If you do decide to free the rod up, make sure you apply anti-sneeze to the threads on the adjustment lever. You will never have a problem with it again!

Radiator shutters were for kerosene burning tractors started on gas, they were required to bring engine temperatures up to temps high enough to vaporize heavy kerosene fuel without stalling and were adjusted to keep the temperature in operating range. Nothing to do with plowing snow, just required for normal operation on kero.

Yeah, that was my late father-in-laws SMTA, my brother in law and I are going to do a complete restoration after I am done with my m....

They were an option on these tractors. My H was owned and sold to me by the original owner who told me that he was given the chance to put these on his H. He resides in brainerd Mn and said it worked wonders for keeping this tractor temprature at an optimal level during the winter months. My tractor was never a kerosene burner as there was no room for another small starting tank and the serial number end with X1 meaning STRICTLY GASOLINE. These shutters had more uses than what you may think.
