May be Petty, but Good News-no head cracks

Just got the word back from the head shop, and my 400D head has no cracks!! The shop foreman has done many of these type heads, and has never seen one that isn't cracked. I've heard from several sources that 90% are bad.

I feel so special.

I assume they pressure checked it in a water tank and checked for bubbles???? maybe have it checked AGAIN by another reputable expert who has delt with these diesel heads.

If it come out good, reinstall it and run it.Watch it close. If it starts spitting water out the exaust or getting into the oil, take the whole rig back up to the rebuiderand run it for him and make him own up to his work!!!

Yes, they pressure tested it and saw no leaks. It's going to an engine rebuilder now. I'll talk to him about it.

By the way, this place was recommended to me by a guy that does a lot of tractor rebuilding as a business, and says he does good work. The place that is going to do the block work says the same thing about him. When I brought in the head, he started talking about all the various Farmall diesel heads his shop had worked on. Mentioned the TD24 as being monster heads, talked about the little steel gaskets, pre-cups, and on and on. Made me feel pretty confident.

Geez, I was all happy, now, not so much -- haha.

Will do -- thanks. (happy again)

(dang, my post was put before yours, Mike. How the heck did that happen?)

NA,

Dont get all "shook up".
Why dont you,and your "block work" guy and the resto man that recomended him all get a drop light and just look the head over when it comes back before it gets installed.it is probably all good!

I went thru the SAME thing with my Ford 600 head.(They crack ALOT too!!!)Mine pressure checked out good and was just fine after I reinstalled it.It runs great!

I am confused about your comment..................... what makes you question the repair shop? A friend had a head sent in for a 450D and it came back good. It does happen useless........funny how your handle implies your post:)

400D, do as Mike suggest for added peace of mind, but congratulations. You just save yourself some money you can put towards your bearings!

Hi I would have the head resurfceed and have it checked agine.I had one presure tested then plained and then the shop called back and said it was cracked. Good Luck

I have taken in an MD head and a WD-9 head that d282 bought for me and both of them checked out ok. The other one d282 gave me has visable cracks that have been repaired so it probably isn't so good. I think these heads get a lot worse rap than they deserve.
