I see the word "Diesel" on the gas tank - is that an orignal decal?

Never saw a diesel M in person, so wondering if that was a standard thing - or if somebody added it later.

Saw a nonrunning (but "could run according to Harley Gerdes) SMD sell on Saturday - $1100.

One of my cousins had a Super MD about the same time I had my gas Super M and I got to use it a little to compare it with my tractor as I was thinking of getting another M type to increase my farming operation. The SMD didn't seem to have quite the power my gasser had...but that sort of figured, my tractor had 4 1/8" bore and firecrater pistons..the SMD was still standard 4" bore. Then it was pretty obvious the tractor was somewhat heavier on the front, it steered harder and handled a little different. Fuel usage was somewhat lower for the SMD, used only 2 to 3 gallons an hour of diesel while my SM would use nearly 4 gallons of gas doing the same job (plowing with 3-16's...and not wasting any time doing it, mostly near wide open throttle in 3rd gear). I would have bought the tractor but it had a nasty rear main leak that my cousin said was fixed once but came back about 2 years later...so I kinda wondered if the crankshaft was okay. Farming "fizzled" on me anyway so as it turned out I would have never needed the tractor. I did like it though, but then again I liked all M type tractors...still do....

Curious...that tractor has a 11" rear rim...at least on that side you can see. Not stock for Super MD, that's like an H uses.

A family friend of ours has a SMD TA. Kind of a "rare" piece (don't jump on me for saying rare). She doesn't want to sell it because her son still uses it to rake hay, but I believe she turned down 11k. The tractor is completely original as well.

You can start them directly on diesel, but only if you have a second tractor and some time to kill because you'll most likely have to tow it quite a long way. They are a very low compression diesel and they really need the preheat provided by running on gas. Sam

(quoted from post at 14:29:05 01/03/12) did you have to start MD's on gas or could you direct start them on diesel? thanks Paul.

Not practically.

Dukester, are you sure that all the supers came with 12" rims? I know my plain MD has 11's. I was sad because I wanted to shoehorn a set of free 14.9s on it. It just really shouldn't be done...
