140 wagon gear

Only infomation I can find is from a 1963 IH Farm Equipment Catalog which states this for the No. 140 Gear: "No. 140, Extra-Heavy-Duty Center Reach Trailer, is built to handle 7-ton capacity forage boxes, and other comparable loads. Adjustable center reach. 84 to 180-inch wheelbase settings." Hope this helps and maybe Jim Becker will see your post as he has lots of specific data if more is needed. Hope this helps, Hal.

The 140 was built from '59 to '72. I don't see a model 144. Otherwise, I have the exact information Hal gave.

I would agree with 6 to 7 tons. Dad had a couple that carried IH model 61 forage boxes on them and he was not afraid to fill them. I would guess those 61's carried maybe 8 tons filled right full without extensions. From what I remembered about them I don't think they compared physically with the 8 and 10 ton gears in terms of frame thickness and wheel hubs and so forth. I wish I could find a 61/ 140 combination just for old time sake.
