340 Hydaraulics

Replaced leaking seals on power steering arms and steering column. Now when I first sart the tractor, I have to work the hydraulic leavers for a minute or so before the hydraulics kick in. Any thoughts onwhat my problem is and what I need to do to make a fix?

I would take the cap off where you fill the system to let the air escape as it sounds like there is still air in the system. Working all the hy valvesshould bleed the air out of the system.

My 340 has always done that. It takes several seconds after a cold start for the oil to hit the pump. In very cold weather it will sometimes stall if I'm not quick enough on the throttle. I even run mine over full for the loader (IH 2000)

I have also noticed it getting starved on hillsides, like the pickup for the pump is not very deep in the sump. I have heard that is normal for this model. Is it?

Must be a small leak in the supply side of the pump system somewhere, allowing the oil to drain back to the reservoir. Could even be the pump shaft seal that will leak back, but not leak into the engine when running.

My 340 has the same symptoms you are describing. It steadily got worse until the drive gear failed completely. You may have a pump slowly going bad. Check for wear and tear. Since I installed a new pump/drive gear combo I have hydraulics as soon as the tractor is running.

Whatever's going on it sounds like the pump is losing prime.

340's rear end is the same design as the 460, so the entire transmission/differential sump is the hydraulic reservoir. It's vented so there's no air to let out.

Either your pump is bad or the pickup tube is sucking air.

A trick on the larger tractors is to dump an extra 5 gallons of hytran into the transmission/rear end to cover the pickup, but I don't know if something like that will work on a 340.
