M distributor

looking at buying an M would like to know why some have the distributor hortizontal and some vertical?

Paul, most verticals were install so that a live pump could be installed. oldiron29

Horizontal distributors are IHC factory original. Vertical are aftermarket Delco.

Delco's were usually used to replace the original IHC magneto. However they are also sometimes found on M's when an aftermarket live hydraulic pump has been added. (The horizonal IHC distributor cap would sometimes hit the oil filter canister when pump is added - swapping in a vertical Delco solves this problem.)

Be aware parts - cap, rotor, points, etc. - are NOT interchangeble between IHC and Delco distributors!

Ms are simple,bulletproof old tractors.not much to go wrong...My late father always said that an M was the best tractor ever-I tend to agree.I have newer and bigger,but I still like(and use)my M.

I agree with Deltared; simple, bulletproof, and easy to find parts for. Ive used mine for just about everything and have enjoyed owning it and using it. They also have a great sound when really pulling. Great old cheap horse power.

Verticals were sometimes added when the tractor had a mounted picker. Verticals are a little more user friendly behind picker tins.

Correct. The parts are not interchangeable, BUT, parts are readily available for either the IHC or the Delco. No problem with either one.
