New water pump leaking

I took the bolster off my H this afternoon to look at the leaking water pump. I put a new one on this last summer, and it started leaking soon after that.

The packing nut was completely backed out. I tightened it up, but am thinking I should take it out, fill it with packing and go from there. How can I prevent this from happening again?

Jim,

It seemed to screw all the way in, should I back it out and repack? I am wondering how many threads should be showing.

About 1/3 or so. Pack it with teflon tape twisted up into a cord. Do not over tighten, it should feel just a little resistance tighten, then back off a little. Jim

Thanks much,

I am disappointed the new water pump had a loose packing and do not want to pull bolster again. I am getting pretty good at that, but have other things to do.

Why did you remove the bolster just to look at the water pump? Maybe you did not know this, but you can remove the water pump without removing the bolster, radiator or even the fan shroud. I have done it several times on Hs and Ms.

I am trying to get my 44 massey running before spring. It is down to putting the engine together. The H needs axle and PTO seals put in before hay raking season.
