'42 H Belly Pump

I have a 1942 "H" with the original belly pump, yet I'm not sure it still functions. How can I tell for sure? I don't have a 3 point yet. Will the current pump be sufficient to lift a 3 point plus implement (5 foot Bushhog)? Thanks and Happy New Year.

My 1950 H has sufficient pressure and flow for a 5' bush-hog and 3-point. I did notuse the top link, I jacked the rear end of the bush-hog up, and left it riding up high on the rear wheel so it would shoot cuttings out, and I only lifted the front half of the hog. After many years of mowing, it still has great pressure.

Check it by pulling on the lever while the engine is running and you foot is off the clutch. If the pump is functioning, it will "load" the engine.

If I was to pay for a 3 point would possibly consider a mag drive live pump using the belly pump for a sump add after market hyd valves up dater the H to late fifitys techniology

Go to your local surplus store and buy a 0-1000 psi pressure gauge. Adapt a quick connect hydraulic fitting to it and plug it into the hydraulic port on the right side of the tractor.

Run the engine at full throttle and pull the rod back. See what you get for pressure. The original pumps put out about 450 psi. The later or updated ones put ot about 800 psi.

If your pump is not putting out 700 psi it may have a hard time with lifting. If you try to lift more than 500 pounds on the 3 point, the front end may get a little light.

If your hydraulics are in good shape no problem with a 5' brush hog. I have a 3pt on my 41 H and it works great with my brush hog

Not to hijack this thread, but how much fluid does the hydro require. Is there a dipstick for the fill hole? I have 7"mower with hydro lift cylinder(non 3pt) that leaks a little when use and I don"t have a good way of checking level of fluid.

This is great info. It will definitely be used. I appreciate your responses and Happy New Year.

Full is 9.5 inches down from the top of the threads on the fill cap. A washer welded to a welding rod with a notch will do. Jim
