Goodbye Petcocks

Got the dipstick installed on the 1950 'H'. What a relief, goodbye to those PITA petcocks. Works great, feels so good I may remove the stupid things and put in pipe plugs.
A few things to be aware of;
First, that boss on the side of the block under the distributor isn't as simple as it looks, it is 2 3/4" thick. You have to drill through 2 3/4" of cast iron to get down to oil. Youj can do it, and if I can, anybody can, but do it careful, make sure you don't break off a bit.
2nd, make sure you go ahead and remove the pan. You will drill and drill and tap, and shed off lots of shavings.
Last, the stick clears the rotating crank by about 3/4". Make sure you drill at the correct angle, don't drill too far towards the center of the pan.
Gonna go out and check oil again.

I have one of the M&W dipsticks on my H. Works good. As for me, I am neutral on dipstick vs. petcock. either/or for me. Mine is in place of one of the petcocks.

My Super M came to me with an aftermarket dipstick. It is mounted in place of the upper petcock; a pipe plug replaces the lower petcock.

The dipstick is pretty slick. It threads into its holder with a knurled knob on the outer end. The stick itself angled about 15 deg downward from horizontal and is calibrated for "FULL" and 1 and 2 quarts low.

I suspect it was made by M&W simply because the tractor has several other M&W accessories (throttle handle, etc) on it.

I always liked the test cocks. I can let a little oil out and if I'm unsure of the quality I catch a little on my finger for a sample. No messing around trying to find a clean rag to wipe a stupid dipstick.

Howard, now that you mention that, I agree with you.......although, I always tend to wipe a dipstick on my pantleg anyway.........

David G - To reply, no there are no instructions. I bought the largest dipstick I could find at the farm & home, I think it was a replacemdnt for a Ford 8N. Re-threaded one end of a 1/4" x 3" pipe nipple to give it straight threadds, and cut the other end off. Drilled and tapped the boss, threaded the nipple in, stuck the dips;tick in, and it all works.
I had to do this, bcause to be honest, i checked my petcocks once in t he spring. I just thought they were awkward.

If you guys really wanna be slick, jusy replace the petcocks with a sight gauge. No sticks, petcocks, oily fingers,OR wiping the stick on your pants!

But then how can you "sample" the oil to determine if it needs changing?

Personally, I'll just leave well enough alone and leave the petcocks right where they are. They really do work pretty darn good.

Are you talking about a glass installed in place of the petcock or taking two elbows and connecting the two petcocks with clear tube?

Not that I am aware of,but I usea small, hydraulic reservoir sight gauges.I can send a picture of one.MOST of them come with temperature gauges(UN NESSESARY).

You can also use just 2 brass 1/4 inch pipe 90 to 1/4 inch tubing compression elbows and a short length of clear tubing.

It beats drilling a block for a dipstick,or looking for a RARE M&W stick, getting oil on your hands even having to mess with the petcocks.

I WOULD recommend putting a "guard" over the sight gauge!!! (If you are like me mowing,A small tree COULD crack your gauge!)

If you are using the original petcock pipe threaded holes, the TOP hole needs to be higher than the actual oil level for it to work. The bottom petcock can be replaced with the 1/4 pipe to 1/4 compression 90.

I do race car oil pans like this all the time! Alot of AFTERMARKET pans do not have dipstick provisions! ("STROKER" oil pans typically do not because of crank clearance, windage trays,ECT...

I agree Rusty,I like my petcocks, but this is just an alternative.

I change my oil at regular intervals/hours anyway.

A REAL good oil sample would need to be taken from the BOTTOM of the pan("cracking" the drainplug)AFTER sitting dormant over night. That is where water/sediment end up.
