Cub crankshaft seals. Front or rear first?

I"m going to replace the front and rear crankshaft seals on my 1949 Cub. Am I better off starting with the front? Or the rear? Or doesn"t it matter? I"m leaning toward replacing the rear first.

If you are going far enough in the dismantle to replace the rear, I would also do the front while in the business.

IMHO

Just got done with mine yesterday did the rear first and then the front. Remember to drive wood wedges between axial and bolster. The seal retainer on the back of the engine may need to be machined or replaced as they don"t make the seal any more. Go to the farmallcub forum a great bunch of guys and a lot of info.

When installing the front seal make sure it is centered with the crankshaft. If not you may need to remove the front cover to reposition it.

During engine assembly, the crank pulley should be installed before bolting the front cover down. This allows the front cover to locate itself in reference to the crankshaft.

I have experienced instances when this procedure had not been followed. The pulley would catch the seal lip and fold it inward instead of sliding into the seal.

Thanx for the replies and the advice. I'll do both while I've got it apart. Decided to do the front first, then assemble the front end to the engine and do the rear. Appreciate the reminder about the wedges. Haven't taken the pulley off yet, but is there a machined portion of the pulley which fits into the inside diameter of the seal? If so, that would explain not tightening the front cover down til the pulley is back on.
