M, front end thump?

I bought an M and pulled it the couple of miles home. What could be the source of a noise coming from the front end (wh bearing?)? It appears to be on a regular cycle and occures several times a second. The front tires are good and I didn't see any wheel wobble. Secondly, and I am embarrased to ask this, how do you get the inside carburetor nut off to remove the carb. I could not get a "regular" open/closed end wrench or socket on it. Thanks, Jon

Two possible answers to the Sound. Tires can flatspot. This causes them to whack the ground once per revolution. The second and probable, is loose front wheel clamps. SOmetimes they require new bolts to cure the damaged threads.
Purchase a pawn shop box end wrench, and bend it so the box end is at a 45degree angle to the left. at about 1 inch from the place where it joins the handle. Jim

I just re-fitted the carburetor to my Farmall M. A Stahlwille 180a Series short ring spanner will fit. It is a 9/16 nut. The 180a spanner are a military specification spanner (I believe). They are quite short and are cranked.
Stahlwille 41603234 1/2" x 9/16", 180a series, Individual double ended ring spanner.

The outside nut has to be undone with an open jawed spanner.

Stahlwille spanner is available from Samstag Sales. http://www.samstagsales.com/

In Australia from: Toolworks.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I meant the nut is 9/16 AF (across the flats) and shank is 3/8" with UNC thread at 16 threads per inch.

I'd guess the wheel bolts are loose. Like Jim says, bend a wrench. I've used the same one for 40 years. I'd take a picture but it's in my tool box at the farm.
