International 1586

We are looking at purchasing a 1978 1586. I have never owned an international tractor before and know next to nothing about them. Are they good tractors? Anything I should look out for?

Thanks in advance for the help.

A 1586 is a decent tractor with a 3 x 2 transmission whereas a 1486 has a 4 x 2 transmission (plus TA). The TA's were always a headache, worked good for about 2000 to 3000 hours and then the whole transmission had to come apart. Shift linkage was a little shaky but could be kept in working order. Should be a good tractor, parts are easy to come by.

Hi Ed,
I beg to differ with you, The Ta's in international tractors were a great item to have. They also worked very will when maintain like any other part of the tractor.

Unless the TA IS OUT, TAs are great. Very desirable and when used they last. Switch them into and out of TA like a light switch, not like a dimmer. Good tractor. Jim

Drain a small amount of Hytran out of rear housing, they hold 20+ gal, look for metal in suspension, hopefully no large pieces come out, these were good horses with some tlc, if its got a lot of hours would need to check all the rear bearings on the trans & diff, lot of failure prone bearings in planetary set-up in each axle housing. Wiggle the fan blade, any looseness the water pump needs replaced. The TA test is riding to brakes to see if it slips. This is about all the easy major things you can do. If it has a cab push the clutch pedal, cab mounts shouldnt give.

like mentioned, the 15's had planetary's and if they are on the way out that is a serious repair bill.

only way i would own a 1566 or 1586 is if the rearend was kosher, and that means checking Hy-Tran like others have mentioned

You will definitely miss the 4th gear which makes the 1486 a better tractor for general use imho. Otherwise a good horse.

One of the cheapest tractors with a quiet cab .Plenty of horsepower, 17/18MPH on road,1000 rpm PTO only, not the greatest design for cab entry and shifter placement. They have one of the strongest rear ends with 4in axles and the TA used and adjusted properly should not be a problem.I bought a 1256 tractor that was represented with T/A out and was told it was out on hi side so bought it sprayed the linkage and valve and it was fixed.I have seen nice 15s bring $10000 but did not know history

You're thinking of the 66 series cab.

The 786 we had had a lot of troubles with the range shifter shaft snap ring. We ended up putting a hatch in the side of the cab to be able to get it fixed so it wouldn't come apart again.

The 15s are a good tilage tractor. You WILL miss the 4th gear if you want to run a discbine with it. Second gear can be tricky to hit in the 66's, I don't know about the 86's.

As others have mentioned, they were a good ole" horse. They were designed for heavier field work back in the day. The transmission leaves plenty of gaps when compared to the 10"s and 14"s of the same era. The cab had some drawbacks, but once you were in it, they were pretty quiet and comfortable. We have had IH tractors since the 1960"s and never once did we replace a TA. We used them but we never treated them as a road brake. Guess we were fortunate.

I've used the 14 and 1586 good work horses, my only complaint with the seat position over the rear wheels not a comfortable ride. Your going to miss not having 8 speed transmission if your going to do road driving. I notice the 16-17mph vs 22-24mph on the two tractors.

OK practical knowledge time. My BIL has one. He is not kind to his equipment. He got it with a fresh TA. It was his prime tillage tractor from about 98 till last spring plus was used with manure, hay and silage. Used, abused and put away wet! The engine is getting pretty tired in it now but the TA has given him no problems.

If the TA is good, Use them and use them alot...lack of use seems to kile them more than anything....I have a 1586 with 7500 hrs bought new in 78 and use the TA all the time...just not on the road.
Change the hyd filter spring and fall and no more, also run the diff one gallon over full. Good luck with it, they are a beast!
