What replaced the 460?

As an old feller, I remember well the "H", "Super H", "300", "350" and the "460". I became quite familar with a "460" in the summer of 1959, and it still remains my favorite tractor of all that I ever ran.

What replaced the "460", and maybe even what were the next few tractors in that long and proud line?

Stan

Probably the 656. The 806 was the next step from the 560. IH built a 606 but I don"t know as I have ever seen one. The 656 was later the 666 and then the 686.

Cowman,

That's exactly what I wanted to know. As a toy collector, I like to have a complete set of the evolution of some tractors. In this lineup, I need a '350' and now need to find a '656', '666' and a '686'. I'll probably just settle for the '656' and a '350' for now.

Thanks for the info.

I think you would come very close to building a 606 by fitting 504 sheet metal on a 460 Utility. I have only seen one 606. It is virtually identical to a 504 Ute except it has six cylinders. That would be the C-221. The sheet metal on the 504 and 606 is identical except for the badges.

Probably not. But the 706 is a heavier frame tractor with the small D282 or C263 engine, Right? I'm not going to sell my 656. I think the 656 is one of the sweetest tractors IH ever built.

As of this time there has not been a 666 or 686 built in 1/16 scale. There was a 1/32 scale 666 built in the mid 70's.

Stan the only 656s made in 1/16 scale were produced in 1996 and 1998 for the Ontario toy show.

I don't have one either so if you find them, buy two.:)~})

Mrs Mccormick had the 504, in their scheme of things 50 hp on 4 cyl, good tractor but just didnt have the cubes in engine for good lugging ability.

IMHO, the "lineage" broke down in 1963.

To say that the 806 "replaced" the 560, to me, is pure madness. There is no comparison to what an 806 will do over a 560.

The 806 has 35HP and two tons on the 560. It's a whole different class of tractor.

Heck if you believe IH, the 460 is the replacement for the 450. They wanted you to believe the 560 was a whole different class of tractor too.

A tractor that replaces a previous model generally has a modest HP increase (10-20%), and incorporates the technological advances of the time. 560 to 806 is way too much of a jump IMHO.

The true replacement for the 460 is the 656.

I believe(from what I have read)that the 656 was built to bridge the wide(rowcrop) gap between the 504 and 706.Same thing with the 826(and also as a direct competetor to the JD 4020)to bridge between the 756 and 856.Course I could be full of $#!+.

Nothing,

That's when IH changed the 'large frame/small frame' thing.

656 eventually replaced the 560 as the new small frame tractor. The 706 started the new large frame line.

The 460 lineage just stopped.

(quoted from post at 15:25:58 12/29/11) where did the 544 fit in?

The 544 replaced the 504, which replaced the 340.

The 340 was a new model to fill the gap that developed as the C morphed into the 230, and the H morphed into the 350. When it was the C and H, there was only about 5HP difference. As of the 230 and 350, the difference was closer to 20HP.
