Hey guys have a 1948 Farmall H haveing trouble keeping trottle lever in postion it is the old saw tooth style is there any thing i can do to ajust it where it will stay in place or do i have to order any replacement parts Thanks fellows Have a happy new year

Using a triangular file (easiest after removal) reshape he teeth uniformly so they have an undercut profile (like the unused ones at the "Idle" end of the travel.
Weld the bent notch so it can also be reshaped to fit the new teeth.
There are reproduction parts made, and the other option is a friction style lever (my preference) that is a direct replacement. Correct police will snear at it but they are not driving it. Jim

We had a Farmall B and took a three corner file and cleaned up the saw teeth and welded the trottle lever and reground it to work.

one other thing you can do is replace the spring that holds the lever up. zip on down to your local hardware store and match up as close as you can to the spring that is in there. get a longer one so you can cut to fit it. cut it longer and see how the tension is, and adjust as necessary.

It isn't just the teeth that get worn down, nor is it the spring that gets weak, although both of those do contribute to the over-all problem. What I have found is the lever itself is "L" shaped on the end you don't see, and this "L" not only gets worn down, but it also wears a groove in the underside of the plate. All of it can be fixed, but how much time do you want to spend? I fiddled around with the throttle on my 1950 H several times and finally replaced it with a brand new reproduction. Should have done that years ago. The new throttle is super smooth to operate and always stays right where I put it.

If you're going to replace, consider upgrading to the square notch throttle, even though it may not be "correct," or even to the M&W style friction throttle.

A new sawtooth will quickly wear down and give you the same problem all over again.

A saw tooth throttle will NOT wear down IF used properly. You do NOT want to just "ratchet" the throttle when you pull back on it. The proper way is to push down on the handle and "disengage" the tooth on the handle from the "saw teeth" on the plate. The one I replaced on my 1950 H was the original, and it lasted 60 years.

I like to replace the bushing and stud. Then drill bushing just large enough to get a nice free fit. Lever has to be able to tilt a little but if too much will not hold in either square or sawtooth style. Needs good spring and teeth of course.

Have M and W friction style on both of my H's and love 'em. I have a good square notch that I replaced just because I prefer the M & W I'd sell cheap.
