Hey guys,

I am still having trouble buying an original pto shield for My Super M(It is NOT a live pto/SM TA style.)it is the standard shield for an M

I see so many of them on EBAY advertised as BOTH H & M and I know they are different. Can I get the dimensions for both so I can tell the difference BEFORE buying?

Also,I have a REALLY good LIVE PTO shield for a SMTA-450 if someone has a good M shield the wanna trade maybee???

And right there is the problem with Ebay. MOST of those sellers don't have a clue there is a difference, but continue to list the same part over and over.

An aftermarket M PTO shield from A&I is right at $65 plus shipping and once you get it painted and installed, no one will ever know the difference.

(quoted from post at 16:06:00 12/26/11) Thank you sir.

I need to go take a look, but I think there is another, sure fire way to tell the difference without knowing the measurements. On an M, all 3 of the mounting tabs are on the inside of the shield. On an H, the top, center tab extends UP, and the bolt hole is OUTSIDE the shield.

BTW Rusty,EVERYONE of the ones listed on EBAY right know for an M/Super M have that center tab OUTSIDE the shield !!!!! (Those are for an H,Correct??? ) LMAO !!!!

Scratch THAT idea. I was wrong!! Boy, is MY face red!!

O.K. A real quick examination and crude measuring reveals that the bottom 2 mounting holes on the H are 6" on center, and those same holes on the M are 9" on center.

The bottom 2 mounting tabs on the M shield are relatively short, and those same tabs on the H shield are considerably longer.

The early H's and M's with 1 1/8" PTO shafts both had a much shorter shield because the dog clutch for the PTO was inside the rear end housing, not in an extension casting like the tractors with 1 3/8" PTO shafts. IIRC in the longer shields the M shield is slightly shorter than the H shield.

Now I am getting TOTALLY confused!

Mine is a 1953 Super M with NO live PTO.The PTO engages on the OUTSIDE of the rear end housing.

Can anybody lay dimensions on what I need ????

I Have no dimensions to go off of,and EVERY D@#MED one advertised SAYING its for an M Are all different !!!!!!!!! (Check EBAY out, some are saying they fit from an H up to a 450????)

Gotta be a better way here?

Mike, your super M does NOT use the early style shield. Send me an email and I will direct you to where you can buy a brand new, aftermarket shield for about the same money as those rusted and beat up mystery shields are selling for on ebay.

Item 320810948958 is like a SM.
Item 320819225076 is a H. Both those not much good. If you see a better one list the #, someone can tell if the pictures anygood. Saw one for over a hundred dollars, at that price I didn't notice what it was for.
