Hey guys need to replace the steering gear in the top of the bolster what's the best way to remove it? This thing has a really bad death woble in 5th gear.

Take the grill off, take the cover off, loosen the nut from the gear. When you turn the wheel the worm gear will pick up on the gear and you can lift it out. Sometimes you can ground the bottom of the gear so it will slide on more and it will fix the problem.

It'll take more than a new steering gear to get rid of the death wobble, but you need to get that gear off first. Probably should start by supporting the front of the tractor, and then removing the lower assembly. After that, remove the nut from on top of the steering gear, and the shaft should then drop out. If not, a little gentle persuasion with a big hammer might be in order. You will need to replace the bushings inside the bolster, most likely will also nee to the worn spots on the shaft built baxk up and turned to size on a lathe.

Warm the gear (not shaft with a torch. (Not radically) then with the nut on to the top of the threads, and with an aluminum or brass buffer, smack it downwards. Jim

Ward has it correct. I had my wife turn the steering wheel back and forth as I pried up on the circle gear. Worked it right up and off.
I got rid of my death wobble by grinding off 1/4" of the back of the worm gear, and making a 1/4" spacer to fit between the worm gear and the bearing; this set the worm gear 1/4" further back, and brought thicker teeth into play with the circle gear. Worked great for me.
I still worry about fatigue cracking of this worm gear shaft, so try this at your own risk.

Well i got the shaft out and just bought a full circle gear of ebay. The shaft dont look worn anywhere so just have to see what happens i will eventually rebuild the entire tractor from front to rear when i restore it,but MDs arent cheap to restore.
