Three Point Linkage

My 1939 Farmall M is fitted with three point linkage. My grandfather fitted a Super AM / Super AMD gearbox lid and drawbar setup, which accommodate the three point linkage cylinder and arms. A fairly easy and very neat way to fit three point linkage and the equipment is all genuine IH. I bought a Farmall H and was wondering if a later tractor with three point linkage had the same gearbox housing/frame which could take a later two piece gearbox lid set up for three point linkage. The arrangement would be neater than having equipment bolted on the outside of the tractor as well creating fewer obstacles for climbing on and off the tractor. Farmall Super AM pictures from book attached.

Dave Slater is going to have to answer. I'm currently working on a Super M and wish I could find those parts in the US, that is one neat installation.

Sorry can't help on that. Be nice if IH would have built some here.
CNKS did you find a good grill for the SM. If you can fix Six 1/4 inch holes drilled to mount a screen and 2 small ones where a M emblem was mounted I have a straight one. Shipping and the chance of damage may make it not practical though.

That brings up the question whether an individual or dealer could buy those parts, whether they would fit on US built tractors, and if any kits were shipped out of Australia.

I have had the same thoughts about the traction lock that was fitted to the British models such as the BM and B-450.

So far as I can tell, the parts should fit U.S. built tractors. The Farmall M, AM, Super AM, Super AMD, Farmall AM-7, AW-7, AW-7 Diesel and A554 (and probably others) all had the same gearbox frame, at least insofar as fitting a gearbox lid goes. I have the original single piece gearbox lid from the my 39 Farmall M in a shed. Our old AW-7 did not have three point linkage and we bought a second hand set off a wrecked A554 and fitted it. The problem I have is in trying to find an Australian built tractor with the same size gearbox as a Farmall H. Unfortunately, Case IH do not list any AM, Super AM, AW-7 etc. on their parts catalogue, so I cannot compare by that method. The search continues…

The Farmall H (W-4) is a lot smaller than the transmission case for a Farmall M (W-6). as far as I am aware Geelong (IH Australia) did not make anything smaller than the Farmall AM and AM-7 and I am not aware of anything made in the Farmall H size.

Dave, Thanks, Mike at Steel Wheel ranch promised he will let me know when he gets a good one. Otherwise I can fix the holes. Shipping one of those can be a problem. I work so slow that it will be at least 6-12 months before I need one. Otherwise I might check with you later on.

The same cover top was used on the AW-6 and the AOS-6. The AOS-6 manual I have shows the belly mount Farmall M style hydraulic pump. The hydraulic pipes went from the belly pump to fittings on top of the transmission cover. The AOS-6 had the same channel frame front end used on the later US built Super W-6 tractors

That is wild!

Just when you think you have seen everything!

I just dont understand why the US market did not do this ?????

Down there they probably did not have to abide by any US patents that kept any other US tractor maker from having a 3 point hitch. That is why IHC has the 2 point, JD the Lindeman hitch and later the 800 hitch, AC the snap coupler hitch and J I Case the egal hitch because Harry Ferguson had the patent's.

A couple more photographs of the three point linkage gear. I'll fit the whole set up on the Farmall M and post of picture of it all assembled for use. It is a strong set up and operated a six foot New Holland drum mower behind the Farmall M, but steering in a straight line for hours on end resulted in very sore arms.
The gearbox lid part number is 841526 R1
The control rod for arm width is 842789 R11

Details from the Super AW-6 Catalogue. Maybe some part numbers correspond to U.S. specification parts?

I suppose it was an option. What percentage of the AM's had that attachment? Perhaps I should monitor the AU and NZ eBay listings. Would I get lucky?

Yep, I like hitches. I have front Fast Hitches on three tractors and have added rear Fast Hitches to 2 SMTA, one 660, and one W-400.

Well, I have a spare gearbox lid, that is 841 526 R11 off an AW-7. The other parts are not all that hard to find out here, need to find a wreck. Problem for getting the parts to the U.S. is the weight; these things are really heavy.

I've seen a B450 diesel with that setup.

Just when I thought the American Farmall 450 was the ultimate "bolt crap on an M" tractor, along comes the B450 with a factory 3pt hitch.

The Brits and Aussies got a lot of mileage out of that M platform... Well into the 1960's.

What I really want is the same set up to fit a Farmall H. Never seen a W4 with three point, so I guess that's that.

French Super C Farmalls had three point systems built into the deck like that. I never have seen an H series though. A system off of a 350 Farmall would be a modestly simple adaptation. Jim
